According to Quartz, advanced Micro Devices announced on Monday that it has agreed to acquire World Labs, an artificial intelligence startup founded by Stanford computer science professor Fei-Fei Li, in an all-stock transaction valued at approximately $8.2 billion. The agreement places Li, widely recognized as a foundational researcher in computer vision and often referred to as the godmother of artificial intelligence, into the role of executive vice-president and chief scientist at AMD, reporting directly to CEO Lisa Su.

World Labs, established in 2024, specializes in spatial intelligence and the development of world models designed to understand and simulate physical environments. The acquisition is expected to close by the end of this year, positioning AMD more aggressively against market leader Nvidia in the escalating race for physical AI and robotics infrastructure.

Prior to the acquisition, Nvidia participated as an investor in World Labs alongside other backers such as Andreessen Horowitz and Marc Benioff. Meanwhile, the Nvidia Cosmos platform serves as a separate world foundation model offering simulation-ready physics models for robotics and physical AI development.

Spatial Intelligence and World Model Mechanics

Unlike conventional generative artificial intelligence systems that primarily produce text, images, or audio from prompts, World Labs focuses on spatial intelligence. The startup researches world models that learn the underlying mechanics of the physical world, allowing them to simulate and predict real-world occurrences from images, video, and text inputs.

Earlier this month, the startup unveiled Atlas, a model capable of processing multi-modal data including text, images, video, and three-dimensional information to generate new views based on spatial relationships. This technology is considered critical for robotics and autonomous systems, where machines must interact dynamically with physical spaces rather than merely process abstract symbols or generate static synthetic media.

Hardware Integration and Strategic Rationale

In explaining the rationale behind the transaction, Li noted that advanced artificial intelligence research requires closer alignment with computing hardware. Writing in a Substack post following the announcement, Li stated that without a focused hardware effort, artificial intelligence development is constrained in efficiency and scale.

AMD and World Labs are not unfamiliar partners. AMD previously participated in the startup's funding rounds, and the two entities established a technical partnership last year to optimize model training and inference workloads on AMD graphics processing units. CEO Lisa Su emphasized that the integration of World Labs will strengthen AMD's open artificial intelligence ecosystem by combining software models with hardware systems.

According to World Labs, world Labs launched the Atlas omni world model on September 1, 2026, achieving real-time persistent 3D world generation from multimodal inputs. According to World Labs, world Labs and AMD established a joint technical co-design effort to optimize ROCm software and Instinct GPU compute pipelines for real-time 3D spatial rendering.

Competitive Landscape and Market Valuation

The multi-billion-dollar acquisition occurs as AMD achieves a significant financial milestone, reaching a $1 trillion valuation earlier in the month amid the broader market boom surrounding artificial intelligence infrastructure. Despite the milestone, AMD's market valuation continues to trail significantly behind Nvidia, which remains the dominant pace-setter in the sector.

The transaction also parallels other aggressive consolidation moves among major chipmakers and foundational AI platforms. Earlier this month, Nvidia agreed to acquire open-source platform Hugging Face for $12.93 billion, securing a dominant foothold in the developer ecosystem. The cross-investments among major players highlight an intense industry scramble for both proprietary spatial technology and developer pipelines.

Transaction Terms and Closing Timeline

The $8.2 billion acquisition price tag represents a substantial valuation premium over the roughly $5 billion target World Labs sought during funding discussions earlier in the year. The transaction is structured as an all-stock deal and is subject to standard closing conditions, with corporate officials targeting completion by the end of 2026.
