Amazon Brings Generative AI Assistant Alexa+ to India with Bilingual Hindi Support

Amazon has launched its conversational artificial intelligence assistant, Alexa+, in India with integrated support for both Hindi and English. The upgraded voice assistant, powered by generative AI technology initially introduced by the company in 2025 and deployed in the United States earlier in 2026, is currently available to all users across the country through an early access testing phase.
The commercial release targets India's massive linguistic demographic, encompassing more than 600 million Hindi speakers. Amazon first introduced Alexa to the Indian market in English in 2017 before adding a basic Hindi language option in 2019. The new Alexa+ rollout marks a significant architectural shift from older transactional command systems, enabling sustained multi-turn dialogues and contextual memory across complex, multi-step requests.

Bilingual Capabilities and Service Integrations

The most prominent technical feature of the Indian release is its ability to process mixed-language inputs. Users can switch between Hindi and English mid-sentence without requiring manual language settings adjustments. Amazon stated that the assistant features a more expressive voice profile designed to handle coordinated tasks, such as managing smart home hardware or executing grocery orders through the Amazon Now quick-commerce service.
Beyond Amazon's internal ecosystem, Alexa+ is deeply integrated with several prominent Indian consumer platforms. The assistant connects directly with food delivery provider Swiggy, Zomato's event ticketing platform District, travel booking services TripAdvisor and MakeMyTrip, and restaurant reservation app EazyDiner. For media consumption, the platform links with Amazon Music as well as local streaming service JioSaavn, functioning as an overarching coordination layer across multiple third-party services.

Pricing Tiers and Prime Integration

Following the conclusion of the early access testing period, Amazon plans to incorporate Alexa+ as a native benefit for existing Prime subscribers at no additional charge. For customers outside the Prime subscription ecosystem, the monthly fee to maintain access to the advanced conversational assistant will be set at 2,000 Indian rupees, approximately $20.85.
This tiered fee structure mirrors Amazon's broader strategy of bundling advanced digital utilities within its Prime loyalty framework. While the company did not disclose total absolute user figures for the region, it reported that its smart home hardware device sales in India have increased by 20% year over year.

Global Rollout Context and Prior Testing

India is part of a broader international expansion phase for Alexa+. Earlier in 2026, Amazon deployed localized language variants of Alexa+ across several major international markets, including the United Kingdom, Canada, Brazil, Mexico, Italy, and Germany.
The path to the Indian commercial debut involved phased public trials. In June, TechCrunch reported that Amazon had initiated targeted invitations for users to participate in specialized testing programs focused on Hindi conversational capabilities before opening broader trials for English-language interactions.

Implementation and Verification Details

Amazon has not established a fixed calendar date for the conclusion of the early access testing window or the formal commencement of billing for non-Prime subscribers. Regional technical operations will continue to rely on the active integration partnerships established with local software providers during the preliminary rollout phase.
