AI Search Tools Gain Three-Fold Influence Over Traditional Search in Shopping: McKinsey

Generative artificial intelligence platforms have outpaced standard web directories in shaping buyer preferences, with nearly one-third of tech-enabled shoppers identifying them as the primary catalyst behind their most recent purchase, according to a report by management consultancy McKinsey reported by LiveMint. Research data indicates that consumers utilizing algorithmic platforms show a 3.2-fold higher likelihood to rank generative search tools above conventional web crawlers, alongside a 2.6-fold higher tendency to value them over family guidance. Approximately 29% of surveyed shoppers stated that algorithmic discovery served as the foremost influence on their latest purchase, ranking them ahead of merchant storefronts, independent review websites, traditional search portals, and personal acquaintances.
Standalone Platforms Versus Merchant Checkout Assistants
The empirical research, conducted in June 2026 across 21,000 consumers in 11 international markets, documented that 56% of consumers engaged standalone chat or discovery tools for product evaluation over the preceding three months, compared to 27% who interacted with specialized shopping assistants integrated directly into retailer applications. While standalone platforms dominated top-of-funnel product discovery, feature comparisons, and brand evaluations, retailer-managed assistants maintained an advantage at final checkout, with 15% of users utilizing merchant assistants to complete purchases compared to 14% relying on third-party standalone tools.
Across the countries surveyed, 53 percent of consumers on average have used AI for shopping in the past three months, according to McKinsey & Company.
Across the United States, shoppers completing transactions via artificial intelligence rose from ten to seventeen percent year over year across all tracked categories in December 2025, according to McKinsey & Company.
Autonomous Transaction Adoption and Category Growth
Consumer willingness to delegate autonomous transaction execution is expanding rapidly across consumer segments. Between 21% and 30% of surveyed users across six major merchandise categories stated that they would allow an AI agent to execute a transaction on their behalf. This willingness represents roughly 1.5 times the proportion of consumers that had already completed an automated transaction. Globally, 14% of AI users reported utilizing an artificial intelligence tool to execute a purchase, representing approximately 9% of the general population across surveyed markets.
Efficiency Gains and Brand Infrastructure Imperatives
Efficiency benefits serve as the primary driver behind rapid consumer adoption, with 81% of AI shoppers noting that algorithmic tools helped narrow and filter complex catalog selections. In addition, 80% valued reductions in manual web browsing and navigation clicks, while 79% observed that AI saved significant research time. The findings point to an evolving commercial landscape where consumers delegate research and product evaluation tasks directly to digital agents. Consultants emphasized that commercial brands must upgrade underlying product metadata, live inventory visibility, and fulfillment logistics to maintain commercial relevance as shopping workflows transition toward agentic evaluation models. The analysis also highlighted that securing consumer data privacy and strengthening proprietary merchant assistants will be essential to capturing retail transactions.
Shopify noted that AI searches utilizing structured catalogs convert at roughly double the frequency of searches depending on stale or scraped content.
