Google Expands AI Mode Search Ads to India and Nine Countries as Multiturn Formats Debut in US

Search engine provider Google expanded sponsored advertising placements within its conversational AI Mode search interface to 10 additional countries, according to Google’s announcement dated October 28, 2026. The geographical rollout brings sponsored ad units to users across Asia and the Pacific, including India, Australia, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Philippines, and Singapore. In addition, the feature activates in Canada alongside African partner markets comprising Kenya and Nigeria, with Pakistan supporting text promotions. The enterprise plans to initiate subsequent localized deployments during the fourth quarter of 2026, bringing commercial placements to audiences across Brazil, Mexico, and the United Kingdom, and stating that those paid placements will carry a visible “Sponsored” label.
Global Geographic Expansion and Rollout Roadmap
Alongside the geographic expansion, the technology company launched a multiturn advertising format within the United States market. This capability enables sponsored promotional units to appear dynamically as searchers submit follow-up prompts throughout an extended conversational query session, rather than appearing exclusively on initial entry queries. According to company research conducted in May 2026, conversational interactions within AI Mode are, on average, three times longer than conventional keyword searches, providing expanded contextual opportunities for brand commercial engagement as users explore subjects and compare consumer products.
Google initially launched ads in AI Mode in May 2025, according to Search Engine Roundtable.
Google said internal US testing in August and September 2026 found similar click-through rates for sponsored and organic product listings in AI Mode.
Multiturn Conversational Ad Formats in US
To govern ad selection across generative answers, Google utilizes a dual routing framework incorporating direct query matching and contextual matching. Direct matching identifies queries expressing immediate commercial intent, while contextual matching evaluates both the user's specific inquiry and the generated response. For example, an individual inquiring about sanitizing an algae-covered swimming pool could encounter targeted promotions for chemical treatments or robotic pool cleaning appliances. Advertisers can leverage preexisting Search, Shopping, and Performance Max campaigns without creating isolated ad budgets or paying supplementary placement fees. The company stated that existing advertising auction mechanisms govern placements, maintaining standard cost-per-click pricing structures and established performance analytics. Furthermore, existing account governance parameters, including negative keywords, brand exclusions, and creative asset pinning, remain fully operative across conversational ad auctions.
Algorithmic Matching and Campaign Integration
The advertising ecosystem natively supports text and Shopping listings, while engineering teams conduct pilot testing for local retail inventory and automotive vehicle placements. While sponsored links positioned above and below standard AI Overviews are currently accessible across more than 200 countries and territories, integrated placements within AI Mode are restricted to newly activated international jurisdictions. Within the regional framework, Indonesia currently accommodates promotions within AI Overviews exclusively, while advertising inventory in Pakistan remains limited to text formats.
