Zelenskyy and Trump Plan New York Meeting Amid Diplomatic Push and Energy Strikes

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced he will meet with US President Donald Trump during the upcoming United Nations General Assembly week in New York, aiming to bolster diplomatic support as Russian drone and missile strikes intensify.

Zelenskyy revealed on social media that he held what he termed an important telephone conversation with Trump, adding that their scheduled face-to-face discussions could change a lot as the conflict enters its fifth year. The announcement follows recent diplomatic outreach by Trump envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff, who traveled to Kyiv and Moscow to engage in talks aimed at restarting a stalled peace track.

Writing on social media, Zelenskyy pointed to growing diplomatic momentum and confirmed that discussions with the American team touched on critical security guarantees. He thanked Trump envoys Kushner and Witkoff for witnessing the situation in Ukraine firsthand during their recent regional visit.

Zelenskyy stated that both sides are actively reviewing specific ideas for de-escalation steps and foundational security protections. These proposals center on energy security, food security, and the preservation of civilian lives, signaling an alignment on broader protective frameworks even as military engagements persist.

The planned summit comes against a backdrop of mounting tensions regarding military tactics and dwindling defense resources. Ukraine has faced an increasingly difficult battlefield situation while running low on powerful Patriot interceptor missiles, which serve as its primary high-tier aerial defense against heavy Russian bombardments.

At the same time, bilateral frictions have surfaced over Ukrainian drone strikes targeting Russian oil refineries. US officials have demanded that Kyiv halt attacks on fuel production facilities following strikes that disabled diesel refining capacity and pushed fuel prices to record highs.

Despite claims from Washington regarding prior understandings to halt strikes on energy infrastructure, both nations continue to exchange heavy aerial fire. Russian defense officials reported a large-scale overnight drone barrage targeting facilities including an oil refinery in Moscow, marking one of the heaviest Ukrainian aerial operations of the year.
