The administration of United States President Donald Trump is planning to sell a $2.8 billion munitions package to Israel, featuring tens of thousands of heavy 2,000-pound bombs, according to a U.S. official familiar with the arrangements. The prospective military transfer has been informally communicated to relevant congressional committees responsible for reviewing major foreign arms sales.

News of the package follows initial reporting by the Washington Post and comes amid ongoing regional military engagements. Neither the U.S. State Department nor the Israeli embassy immediately responded to requests for comment regarding the planned transaction.

The proposed $2.8 billion military hardware package comprises 20,000 MK 84 bombs and 20,000 BLU-117 munitions, according to the U.S. official who spoke on condition of anonymity. Large foreign military sales of this scale must undergo informal review by key congressional oversight committees before formal notification procedures can proceed.

The inclusion of 20,000 heavy 2,000-pound munitions centers the transaction on high-capacity explosive ordnance that has played a central role in recent military campaigns across Gaza and Lebanon, drawing sustained scrutiny from international human rights experts over civilian impact.

The planned arms transfer advances against a backdrop of widening military actions in the Middle East. On February 28, the United States and Israel launched joint attacks against Iran, prompting retaliatory Iranian strikes directed at Israel and Gulf state territories hosting American military installations.

Simultaneously, Israeli military operations in Lebanon and the ongoing campaign in Gaza have resulted in thousands of deaths and widespread population displacement. According to Gaza health authorities, more than 73,000 Palestinians have been killed during the military campaign, while a United Nations inquiry concluded that Israel had committed genocide in Gaza, an accusation that the Israeli government rejects.

The arms sale proposal coincides with shifting domestic political sentiment within the United States regarding military assistance to Israel. Public backing has declined since the outbreak of the Gaza war in October 2023, particularly among Democratic voters.

A Quinnipiac University poll conducted in June indicated that 48 percent of all U.S. voters and 66 percent of Democrats believe Washington is overly supportive of Israel. Those figures represent a substantial increase from 2017, when only 16 percent of voters and 20 percent of Democrats held the same view when the polling question was first introduced.
