Polish Priest Killed and Four Injured in Knife Attack at Jarosław Abbey

A 31-year-old Ukrainian man was arrested following a knife attack on Thursday at a Benedictine Sisters abbey in the southeastern Polish town of Jarosław, leaving one priest dead and four other people injured. Police and local prosecutors confirmed that the assault occurred at approximately 9:30 a.m. on the abbey grounds, resulting in the hospitalization of five victims consisting of three clergymen and two laypersons.

The abbey features a fortified architectural design surrounded by an extensive wall system spanning 840 meters. Meanwhile, national figures indicate that Polish police documented 543 hate-motivated crimes between January and July 2025.

Authorities stated that one of the injured priests, identified by a nearby cathedral as Stanisław Zbojnowicz, succumbed to his injuries in hospital, while two other victims remained in serious condition. The superior of the Benedictine Sisters Monastery, Barbara Dendor, told local media that Zbojnowicz was inside a confessional when the attack began and rushed out to close the gates before being stabbed by the assailant.

Prosecutors investigating the incident revealed that the unidentified suspect had crossed into Poland from Germany in the early hours of Thursday and was traveling toward the Korczowa border crossing with Ukraine, located roughly 30 kilometers from Jarosław. For reasons still under investigation, the suspect did not cross the border and instead entered Jarosław, where he entered the abbey complex using a knife taken from a kitchen.

Bilateral cooperation in criminal matters between Poland and Ukraine is regulated by an agreement signed in Kyiv in May 1993. Furthermore, detained individuals possess rights under the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations to communicate with consular officials.

Prosecutor Bożena Harasz-Wołoszyn stated that blood samples had been taken from the suspect to test for alcohol and drugs, and medical evaluations were required before formal interrogation could proceed. Witnesses recounted that the man had earlier approached the abbey gates asking for financial assistance and fell into a rage after being asked to return later, allegedly making threats against clergy members.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced on social media that the perpetrator is in police custody and will face the full severity of Polish law. President Karol Nawrocki called for a rapid and thorough clarification of all circumstances surrounding the tragedy, emphasizing that the state must act firmly and without hesitation.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy strongly condemned the attack, describing it as a horrific crime and stating that the perpetrator must bear full responsibility in accordance with the law. The Ukrainian embassy in Warsaw also issued a statement urging the public not to allow pain to escalate into hatred or new violence, stressing that legal accountability must remain strictly based on the law.

Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński confirmed that psychological support services were being dispatched to witnesses and individuals affected by the violence. The tragedy unfolded against a backdrop of recent social tensions in Poland involving local citizens and Ukrainian refugees who arrived following Russia's full-scale invasion.

Community leaders expressed concern over potential societal backlash, with humanitarian figures warning on social media against rising hostility. Meanwhile, municipal authorities in Jarosław announced that the town would observe a period of mourning through the end of the week as medical teams continued treating the surviving victims.
