Oregon Teacher and Armed Parent Subdue Shooter at Elementary School

A brave teacher confronted an armed teenage assailant inside an Oregon elementary school classroom, wrestling him to the ground before an armed parent entered the room and fatally shot the suspect multiple times. The violent attack unfolded at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, when the shooter fired through locked glass doors to breach the building. Before being neutralized, the shooter killed four people: three children aged 5, 8, and 11, alongside 25-year-old special education teacher Meghan Lambert. Two other individuals sustained gunshot injuries during the rampage, including a 7-year-old student and 54-year-old teacher Becky Drury, who were hospitalized for emergency surgical care. Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz commended the extraordinary heroism of both the unarmed teacher who tackled the shooter and the armed father whose rapid intervention stopped catastrophic bloodshed.
Classroom Confrontation and Heroic Teacher Intervention
Investigators disclosed that the shooter targeted a specialized classroom designed for students requiring intensive behavioral and educational support. As the teenage gunman advanced into the room wielding a pump-action shotgun, an unidentified teacher threw her mobile phone at his face to create a momentary distraction. She immediately lunged forward and tackled the suspect to the floor, struggling desperately to wrestle the 12-gauge weapon from his grasp. Chief Krantz affirmed that the educator was miraculously unhurt and emphasized that her willingness to engage the assailant directly prevented massive loss of life.
Armed Bystander Intervention and Suspect Neutralization
An armed parent, identified by relatives as Kaylub Giamanco, observed the suspect discharging shots outside the school facility and immediately pursued him indoors. Entering the classroom while the teacher was actively wrestling with the gunman, Giamanco produced a concealed handgun and fired multiple defensive rounds. The gunfire fatally neutralized the teenage shooter on the floor, ending the active assault before arriving police officers secured the perimeter. Ballistic forensics revealed that the assailant had discharged approximately 15 rounds and was carrying 44 additional shotgun shells when stopped.
Suspect Profile, Weapon Origin, and Community Response
Police identified the deceased shooter as 16-year-old Griffin J. John II, a former special education student who had previously attended the school. Preliminary investigative findings indicated that the 12-gauge pump-action shotgun deployed in the attack had been purchased legally by his mother. Wounded teacher Becky Drury continues to receive specialized hospital treatment, with family members reporting stable progress following emergency surgeries.
