Captain Smit Machchhar, an Indian pilot from Mumbai flying the Boeing 737 MAX 8 on Flight FZ1073, was severely injured when his co-pilot allegedly attacked him. Flight-tracking data showed the aircraft plunging nearly 14,000 feet in less than 30 seconds during the altercation before stabilizing and executing an emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.
Cockpit Struggle and Emergency Landing
The 182 people on board experienced chaotic moments as the aircraft executed sharp descents, climbing from a cruising altitude of 34,000 feet down to 16,600 feet at 05:21 GMT, followed by subsequent altitude shifts and transponder squawk code changes. Despite severe injuries, Captain Machchhar managed to open the cockpit door from the inside, allowing passengers and crew members to intervene and restrain the attacker.
Israeli passenger Yaniv Hayun recounted that Machchhar was positioned near the door and, despite bleeding heavily, maintained the presence of mind to unlock it. Passengers utilized headphone cords and plastic zip-ties to secure the Omani co-pilot while a reserve crew member took over flight controls to complete the emergency diversion into Saudi Arabia.
International Reactions and Security Scrutiny
Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Captain Machchhar via video call, praising his courage, composure, and resilience during the crisis, noting that his actions prevented a major catastrophe. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu similarly lauded the pilot as a true hero, while telling Fox News that preliminary indications suggested the co-pilot had undergone Islamist radical indoctrination.
US President Donald Trump stated that officials were investigating potential links between the Omani co-pilot and Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. According to The Times of Israel, meanwhile, Saudi Arabia's Interior Ministry confirmed that the suspect had been cleared by medical personnel and transferred to Abu Dhabi escorted by a security team, matching the relocation of Captain Machchhar for ongoing medical care.
