Binance Covers 90 Percent of Losses Following 6.3 Billion Dollar Cyberattack

Cryptocurrency trading platform Binance covered 90% of the 6.3 billion dollars in assets stolen during a hack on Thursday, according to reporting by BBC. The remaining 10% of affected assets may require additional time to source in requisite volumes, the company stated in a formal announcement. Binance pledged to cover 100% of the losses stemming from the security breach, stating that it has set aside more than 6.34 billion dollars in corporate treasury reserves to absorb the financial impact. The exchange stated that all user holdings across bitcoin, ethereum, Tether, and seven other widely-traded crypto assets are fully covered.
Intrusion Scale and Technical Attack Vectors
According to crypto-monitoring firm Elliptic, the theft represents the largest known heist of any kind. The amount involved is more than four times the 1.5 billion dollars stolen from Dubai-based exchange Bybit last year, which previously ranked as the largest cryptocurrency theft on record. Initial internal inquiries indicated that an engineer's laptop was compromised, granting perpetrators unauthorized access, though later updates revealed additional breach points across system components. Binance co-chief executive officer Richard Teng stated that multiple attackers executed the operation, employing sophisticated obfuscation methods including a self-destruct mechanism.
Fourteen hours after wallets were drained of $6.3bn, BNB dropped 5.7%, trailing bitcoin by 1.8 percentage points, according to Kaupr.
During a May 2019 incident, attackers stole around $40m, which was covered by the SAFU fund as BNB fell 7% on day one, according to Kaupr.
Law Enforcement Coordination and Asset Freezes
The United States Secret Service stated on Friday that it is working continuously alongside private sector entities to trace, freeze, and recover the stolen digital funds. Two major blockchain analytics firms reported robust intelligence implicating North Korean state-backed cyber units, identifying the Lazarus Group, also known as TraderTraitor, as the likely perpetrators.
Platform Recovery Timelines and Exchange Activity
Binance operates as the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange by trading activity, handling transactions valued at roughly 95 billion dollars daily. More than 2.5 billion dollars of the purloined digital assets was moved in a single transaction during the initial intrusion. The company stated its subsequent operational goal focuses on reopening withdrawal services for platform users on Sunday, November 1. Founded in China in 2017, the trading platform provides digital asset exchange services to an estimated global user base exceeding hundreds of millions of individuals. In addition, Binance co-founder Yi He addressed social media commentary from billionaire Elon Musk following the incident, referencing historical ties where Binance contributed 500 million dollars toward Musk's 44 billion dollar purchase of Twitter in 2022.
