Rumored OLED MacBook Pro Redesign to Feature 'Significantly Lighter' Build

Apple is reportedly preparing a major design refresh for its upcoming MacBook Pro lineup, with new models expected to feature OLED displays and a significantly lighter chassis. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, the company has reengineered the internal layout of the laptops, miniaturizing parts and rearranging components to reduce overall weight. While specific weight figures have not been disclosed, the redesign is intended to make the machines easier to carry, addressing a common critique of the current 16-inch models.
Tandem OLED screens use multiple light-emitting layers to produce more light and last longer. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman stated that the upcoming MacBook Pro models with OLED displays will be significantly lighter.
New Features and Hardware
Beyond the weight reduction, the upcoming MacBook Pro models are rumored to introduce several firsts for the product line. These include the integration of touchscreen capabilities and the adoption of a Dynamic Island-style interface element, replacing the traditional notch. The laptops are expected to be powered by the existing M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, as Apple reportedly shifts its development focus toward the M7 generation, skipping higher-end M6 variants for this refresh.
Apple has reengineered the laptop's interior to make it easier to carry, as the current 16-inch MacBook Pro weighs up to 4.8 pounds compared to the 15-inch MacBook Air at 3.3 pounds. The rumored OLED MacBook Pro and touchscreen updates follow earlier transitions by Apple to Apple Silicon and Mini-LED display panels.
Software and Launch Timeline
To support the new hardware, Apple is developing updates for its operating system, with the machines currently being tested on a beta version of macOS 27.2. The software will include specific adaptations for touch input and the Dynamic Island interface. The new OLED MacBook Pro models are expected to be positioned as higher-end, premium offerings within Apple's lineup, with a potential launch scheduled for October or November 2026. This refresh is part of a broader series of updates, with reports also pointing to a new smart home hub and updated HomePod mini and Apple TV devices arriving in the same timeframe.
