Refurbished iPhones Gain Popularity in India as Smartphone Prices Climb

Demand for refurbished premium smartphones is surging across India as higher prices for brand-new handsets prompt consumers to seek value alternatives, The Economic Times reported. Refurbished electronics retailer ControlZ recorded 100% sales growth during the recent festive period, driven primarily by strong consumer appetite for the iPhone 13, iPhone 14, and iPhone 15 lineups, The Economic Times noted. ControlZ founder and chief executive Yug Bhatia stated that the Rs 30,000 to Rs 50,000 price bracket emerged as the company's best-performing commercial category. Bhatia explained that when a brand-new entry-level Android handset costs roughly the same as a certified pre-owned iPhone, a majority of consumers opt for the Apple device.
Market Scale and Apple's Volume Share
India's overall pre-owned smartphone market encompasses nearly 5 crore active units, with Apple iPhones representing approximately 15 to 20% of that volume, The Economic Times reported. Bhatia observed that while physical product inventory remains adequate, establishing formal operational structure within the unorganised resale market is necessary to expand access to refurbished smartphones in smaller towns. Improving retail transparency and testing standardization helps facilitate consumer adoption of refurbished electronics across tier-2 and tier-3 townships. The ongoing consumer shift toward certified pre-owned devices reflects a structural evolution in how Indian smartphone buyers evaluate device longevity and brand equity.

Accounting for 23% of exchanges, the iPhone 13 remains the most frequently traded model, though exchange activity is pivoting toward newer generations, according to The New Indian Express.
Prices for superb tier units run 26% lower than original costs, while best value devices are discounted by 36%, according to The New Indian Express.
Premium Device Trade-Ins and Tier-3 Growth
Re-commerce platform Cashify documented a more than twofold expansion in retail sales of refurbished smartphones priced above Rs 50,000, The Economic Times reported. Device trade-ins within that premium price segment registered an even sharper increase, surging by more than four times year on year, The Economic Times noted. Cashify registered a comprehensive 25% increase in total exchange volumes across regional hubs, with the average trade-in valuation reaching Rs 15,105. Geographic data revealed that trade-in activity in Tier 3 cities and smaller towns expanded by 49%, outpacing the 39% growth rate recorded across India's top six metropolitan centers.
Brand Dynamics and Accelerated Upgrade Cycles
Consumer trade-in activity highlighted shifting brand dynamics, with Motorola and Google recording the fastest growth in device upgrades at 79% and 74% respectively, The Economic Times reported. Samsung maintained its leadership position in overall trade-in unit volumes across the nationwide re-commerce marketplace. Furthermore, consumers are increasingly trading in newer smartphone generations, including models from the iPhone 15, iPhone 16, and iPhone 17 families to maximize residual resale value. Persistent inflation in flagship smartphone sticker prices is accelerating the adoption of formal refurbished trade-in ecosystems across Indian consumer demographics, according to The Economic Times.
