BSNL Prepares for 5G Expansion Following Successful 4G Network Rollout

State-owned telecom provider Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is shifting its strategic focus toward 5G expansion, following the successful performance and ongoing rollout of its indigenous 4G network. According to Vivek Dua, Principal General Manager at BSNL, the company is actively preparing for the next generation of mobile connectivity while continuing to expand its 4G footprint across the country.
Network Transition and Consumer Initiatives
BSNL is leveraging its existing infrastructure to facilitate the transition to 5G. The company has introduced several consumer-centric platforms to improve service quality and network transparency. A key initiative is the upgrade of its AI-powered chatbot, Vani, which is now integrated with the core network to provide real-time network health status and allow subscribers to book complaints through voice conversations in regional languages. This integration aims to reduce resolution times for connectivity issues.
Security and Digital Communication Platforms
In a move to bolster cybersecurity, BSNL has partnered with Saptang Labs to deploy an indigenous data filtration mechanism within its core network. This system is designed to identify and neutralize security threats before traffic reaches end-user devices, ensuring a cleaner data flow. Additionally, the company has unveiled 'Bharat Sandesh', a unified digital communication platform. This AI-powered interface is designed to facilitate verified, two-way interactions between citizens, government bodies, and commercial entities such as banks and utility companies.
BSNL's recent developments are supported by ongoing government backing, which has been instrumental in the deployment of indigenous telecom infrastructure and the BharatNet project. The company intends to further develop an All-Photonics Network in collaboration with Fujitsu Japan, utilizing existing dark fiber infrastructure to support future-ready connectivity.
What a 4G-to-5G transition means for subscribers
A network that is technically upgradeable to 5G is not the same as one offering commercially available 5G coverage in a particular town. Subscribers should distinguish completed 4G radio deployment, 5G trials, spectrum readiness and actual activation of compatible sites. Coverage maps, handset compatibility, indoor reception and congestion during busy hours will have more immediate value than nationwide targets. BSNL's indigenous technology stack also creates a useful test of local telecom capability: whether equipment can be maintained and upgraded reliably at scale. Customer-service chatbots and security filtering may improve operations, but performance claims require measurable evidence such as complaint resolution times, dropped-call rates and independently tested speeds.
