Yash Thakur Replaces Injured Harshit Rana for Afghanistan T20Is and Asian Games

India fast bowler Harshit Rana has been ruled out of the upcoming T20I series against Afghanistan and the 2026 Asian Games after suffering another injury setback. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that Vidarbha pacer Yash Thakur has been named as his replacement in both squads. The decision comes after Rana experienced a recurrence of physical issues during his rehabilitation process, forcing the national selectors to alter their plans just days before the bilateral series begins.

While Rana's exclusion is a significant blow to India's pace bowling depth, the team received a major boost with the fitness clearance of premier fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah. Alongside Bumrah, all-rounders Washington Sundar and Nitish Kumar Reddy have also been declared fully fit and cleared to participate in the upcoming assignments. The updated squad will now finalize their preparations in Delhi before embarking on a busy month of international and continental cricket.

Harshit Rana was reportedly making steady progress during his rehabilitation program at the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru. However, his comeback plans were derailed during a match simulation on September 7, 2026. According to an official statement released by the BCCI, the young fast bowler sustained a rectus femoris strain while bowling in the practice session, which immediately ruled him out of the upcoming matches.

This latest injury adds to a highly frustrating year for Rana, who has struggled with consecutive physical setbacks. Earlier this year, the pacer suffered a hamstring injury during the third T20I against England at Trent Bridge. He subsequently injured his knee during a warm-up match against South Africa ahead of the 2026 Men's T20 World Cup, which ruled him out of the marquee tournament. Following knee surgery, Rana missed the entire 2026 Indian Premier League season with the Kolkata Knight Riders before briefly returning to the national setup for an ODI against Afghanistan in June.

With Rana sidelined, the Men's Selection Committee turned to 27-year-old Vidarbha pacer Yash Thakur. Thakur recently made his international debut during India's tour of Zimbabwe in July, where he played two T20Is and claimed four wickets. His debut came on July 25 in Harare, where he registered figures of 2/30 in four overs to help India secure a comfortable 90-run victory.

Thakur has built a reputation as a reliable limited-overs bowler in the domestic circuit. He has played 50 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy matches, taking 81 wickets at an impressive economy rate of 7.04. Across all domestic T20s, he has accumulated 114 wickets in 76 matches, including five four-wicket hauls and two five-wicket hauls. In the Indian Premier League, Thakur has played 22 matches and taken 27 wickets, having debuted for Lucknow Super Giants in 2023 before being acquired by Punjab Kings for Rs 1.60 crore. He recently showed strong form in the Duleep Trophy semi-finals for Central Zone, dismissing prominent batsmen including Ishan Kishan and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.

In contrast to Rana's misfortune, the Indian team management welcomed the return of Jasprit Bumrah. The premier fast bowler had been sidelined since July, missing the third ODI against England and the subsequent two-Test series in Sri Lanka due to a recurring injury in his left knee. His clearance is a massive relief for a bowling attack that will rely heavily on his experience in the upcoming tournaments.

This series will serve as a crucial warm-up for the squad before they transition to multi-sport competition.

Following the final T20I, the Indian contingent will depart Delhi on September 18 for Japan to participate in the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games. Before their official campaign begins, India will play a historic T20I against Japan on September 22. As the defending champions, India will enter the Asian Games men's cricket competition directly at the quarter-final stage on September 28, with the semi-finals scheduled for October 1 and the gold medal match on October 3.

Shreyas Iyer will captain the squad for both the Afghanistan series and the Asian Games, with Tilak Varma appointed as his deputy. The selectors have maintained a consistent 15-member squad across both assignments to ensure tactical continuity and team chemistry ahead of the knockout matches in Japan.
