Teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has been appointed captain of Bihar's senior men's cricket team for the opening fixtures of the 2026 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. At just 15 years of age, the left-handed opening batter will make history as the youngest player ever to captain a senior side in professional Twenty20 cricket. Sooryavanshi surpasses the previous domestic tournament benchmark established by Mahipal Lomror, who led Rajasthan at 18 years and 67 days in 2018. The Bihar Cricket Association released a 17-member squad on Friday, designating all-rounder Suraj Kashyap as vice-captain for the tournament's opening round. Bihar will inaugurate their domestic campaign against Saurashtra in Indore on November 14, followed by a second fixture against Railways on November 16.

Record-Setting Leadership Milestone and Tournament Schedule

BCA president Harsh Vardhan stated that the leadership appointment will provide the young cricketer with valuable experience as he develops his tactical skills. Vardhan expressed confidence that under Sooryavanshi's guidance, the state squad will deliver a disciplined and competitive performance in the domestic championship. The selection committee finalized the roster following evaluation trials conducted from November 4 to 6 under committee chairman Harvinder Singh. Selection officials also named 16 standby players, while noting that the availability of Mangal Mahour and pacer Shakib Hussain remains subject to fitness. Sooryavanshi's captaincy assignment will cover the first two games before he departs to join the India A squad for the Asia Cup Rising Stars tournament in Doha. In January 2024, Sooryavanshi made his first-class debut for Bihar against Mumbai at 12 years of age. The selection committee also included wicketkeeper-batters Ayush Loharuka and Anmol Kumar in the squad.

Under-19 World Cup Triumph and IPL Exploits

The leadership honor marks the latest progression in an extraordinary competitive season across youth, franchise, and senior international cricket. Earlier this year, Sooryavanshi guided India to victory in the Under-19 World Cup final against England, scoring 175 off 80 deliveries to earn Player of the Tournament honors. He subsequently claimed the Orange Cap in IPL 2026 while representing Rajasthan Royals, accumulating 776 runs across 16 innings at a strike rate exceeding 237. Those performances earned him a senior national call-up, making his international Twenty20 debut against England in Manchester in July. Across 44 career Twenty20 matches, the teenager has displayed remarkable boundary-scoring capabilities against established international bowling attacks.

International Record Partnerships and Domestic Goals

In his most recent international outing against New Zealand, Sooryavanshi combined with opening partner Abhishek Sharma to establish a world record. The pair blasted 118 runs without loss across the opening six overs, registering the highest powerplay total in men's Twenty20 International history. Their blistering opening stand yielded 133 runs from just 43 balls, with Sooryavanshi contributing 45 off 19 deliveries alongside Sharma's 113. Sooryavanshi now brings that dynamic offensive approach to Bihar's domestic campaign, seeking to improve on the state's record from the previous edition.
