Powell Powers Jamaica Kingsmen Into CPL Final After Hetmyer Century

Rovman Powell delivered a blistering late-innings assault to guide the Jamaica Kingsmen to a five-wicket victory over the Guyana Amazon Warriors in Qualifier 2, securing a spot in the Caribbean Premier League final in Bridgetown on Friday. Chasing a target of 207, the Kingsmen overcame a magnificent unbeaten 102 off 45 deliveries by Shimron Hetmyer to reach 207 for 5 with two balls to spare.

The defeat eliminated the table-topping Amazon Warriors, who had dominated the league stage with eight wins from ten matches but suffered their third consecutive loss following defeats against the Barbados Tridents and the Antigua and Barbuda Falcons. Despite Hetmyer's stellar century, which included eight sixes and lifted his side from a precarious early collapse, Guyana failed to defend their total against a disciplined and multi-pronged Jamaica chase.

Invited to bat first, the Amazon Warriors suffered a disastrous start as openers Mohammad Haris and Mavendra Dindyal were dismissed inside the first five overs. Haris fell to a direct-hit run-out at the non-striker's end by Hassan Khan, while Dindyal was caught at deep square leg off Hassan's bowling. Left in early trouble at 4.2 overs, Guyana found salvation through Hetmyer, who anchored the middle overs.

Hetmyer constructed a vital 96-run partnership for the third wicket with Shai Hope, contributing 55 runs off just 23 balls during the stand, while Hope provided 38 from 27 deliveries. Facing a formidable target of 207, the Kingsmen built their chase through steady partnerships rather than relying on a single innings. Openers Maaz Sadaqat and Kirk McKenzie laid a solid foundation by adding 42 runs in three overs before Sadaqat fell for 41 off 17 balls to a slower delivery by Dwaine Pretorius. McKenzie and Keacy Carty then combined for a 48-run stand before McKenzie was dismissed by Imran Tahir.

A further 62-run partnership off 41 balls between Carty and Saim Ayub kept the required run rate manageable. When Ayub departed as the third wicket, the Kingsmen still required 55 runs from 29 deliveries with four overs remaining. Powell walked to the crease and engineered the winning sequence after starting cautiously.

Powell targeted Khary Pierre in the 17th over, striking two sixes in the first four deliveries. Even after Carty was run out for 56 off 40 balls in the same over, Powell maintained the momentum by hitting Tahir for a six and collecting a boundary and a major hit off Shamar Joseph in the 19th over. Despite Andre Russell struggling for timing with two runs from five balls, Powell finished unbeaten on 40 from 17 deliveries, allowing Hassan Khan to seal the victory with consecutive twos.

The victory marks a remarkable achievement for the Jamaica Kingsmen, who reached the CPL summit clash in their debut franchise season. By overturning the 207-run target, they ended the campaign of the league leaders and set up a title clash against the Antigua and Barbuda Falcons.

The CPL final is scheduled for Sunday in Bridgetown, where the Kingsmen will contend for the championship trophy, while Rovman Powell and Shimron Hetmyer shared the Player-of-the-Match honors for their impactful performances.
