Pakistan Refuses Opening-Round Israel Match at Chess Olympiad

Pakistan declined to field a team against Israel in the opening round of the 46th FIDE World Chess Olympiad in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, resulting in a 4-0 walkover victory for the Israeli side. The match, scheduled for Wednesday, saw all four boards left unplayed as Pakistani officials cited government policy regarding Israel.

Officials from the Chess Federation of Pakistan confirmed that the withdrawal was tied to national diplomatic positions rather than athletic competition. Gauhar Iqbal, Secretary General of the Pakistan Chess Federation, explained the stance to ChessBase India, emphasizing that participation was avoided because Pakistan does not officially recognize the state.

Gauhar Iqbal noted that the federation's hands were tied by national directives governing international engagements with non-recognized nations. Iqbal stated that the decision was based purely on state policy rather than any animosity toward individual athletes or the spirit of sportsmanship.

"It was very obvious that when we do not recognize a state, how can we play or how can we get engaged with that state? It's a state policy, and we have to follow the state as we are here to represent Pakistan, and we have to follow the policies of Pakistan," Iqbal said. He added that the choice carried no personal animus, maintaining that it was strictly adherence to official government guidelines.

Beyond administrative directives, leadership within the chess governing body pointed to broader geopolitical messaging. Syed Zeeshan Naqvi, President of the Chess Federation of Pakistan, stated that the boycott served as an expression of solidarity with the Palestinian people amidst ongoing regional conflict.

"We have boycotted the match to express solidarity with the Palestinian people," Naqvi said. Despite skipping the opening fixture against Israel, federation representatives confirmed that Pakistan intends to stay in the tournament and continue its campaign across other scheduled fixtures in the multi-nation competition.

The 46th FIDE World Chess Olympiad runs from September 15 to 27 in Samarkand, drawing more than 390 teams across separate open and women's competitions. As one of the largest fixtures on the global chess calendar, the tournament brings together national delegations from around the world.

While the walkover awards Israel four points and a 4-0 scoreline for the opening round, Pakistan's leadership indicated that the delegation remains active in the broader event. Syed Zeeshan Naqvi affirmed that the team will continue its international participation in subsequent rounds while remaining compliant with government guidelines.
