Kimi Antonelli Claims Inaugural Madrid F1 Victory After Norris VSC Misfortune

Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli secured victory in the first-ever Formula 1 grand prix at Madrid's Madring circuit on Sunday, capitalising on a virtual safety car incident that ruined pole-sitter Lando Norris's race strategy. Antonelli finished 4.351 seconds ahead of Red Bull's Max Verstappen after 57 laps of the TAG Heuer Gran Premio de España, extending his drivers' championship lead to 292 points with nine rounds remaining.

Norris had controlled the early stages from pole position, building a five-second cushion within the opening ten laps. However, the race swung decisively on lap 13 when Lance Stroll parked his Aston Martin in the run-off area at Turn 20, triggering a virtual safety car. While Antonelli, Verstappen, and George Russell immediately dived into the pitlane for cheap stops, Norris had already bypassed the pit entry, forcing McLaren to bring him in a lap later under green flag conditions.

The timing of the virtual safety car proved catastrophic for McLaren's race strategy. Norris missed the pit window by a matter of metres, losing roughly 15 seconds compared to his rivals who exploited the slowed field. Compounding the error, McLaren's service for Norris suffered a slow seven-second delay on the front-right tyre, dropping the championship contender down to fifth place upon his rejoin.

Ferrari's Charles Leclerc temporarily inherited the lead by opting to stay out on his original hard tyres, holding the front position until lap 48. Once Leclerc finally pitted, Antonelli inherited a lead he would not relinquish to the finish line. Antonelli acknowledged the fortune of the timing over team radio, noting his sympathy for Norris while celebrating his eighth grand prix victory of the 2026 season.

The opening lap at the tight street circuit immediately generated high tension and controversy. Antonelli ran wide and briefly jumped ahead of Norris twice before returning the position. Behind them, Max Verstappen overtook both Lewis Hamilton and Antonelli on the opening lap by cutting the first chicane to avoid his rival's Ferrari.

Red Bull swiftly ordered Verstappen to return the position, prompting an angry radio message where the reigning champion blasted the officiating as Mickey Mouse racing. The penalty cost Verstappen track position against Antonelli, setting up a defensive afternoon where he ultimately fended off Norris for second place. Meanwhile, Ferrari's afternoon collapsed early when Lewis Hamilton retired on lap seven due to a terminal brake failure, effectively extinguishing his remaining title aspirations.

Drivers and team principals highlighted the severe limitations of overtaking around the newly introduced Madrid layout. The abrasive street circuit punished mistakes, resulting in four high-profile retirements. Along with Hamilton's brake failure and Stroll's stranded Aston Martin, home favourite Carlos Sainz suffered a DNF for Williams after picking up a five-second time penalty for colliding with fellow Spaniard Fernando Alonso at Turn 5. Sergio Perez also retired his Cadillac before the checkered flag.

Further down the order, Liam Lawson delivered his strongest result for Red Bull yet by finishing sixth, just ahead of Alpine's Franco Colapinto, who won the midfield battle. Mercedes driver George Russell executed a two-stop strategy to finish fifth and secure the fastest lap with a 1:35.587, while Arvid Lindblad took ninth for Racing Bulls after a fierce duel with Audi's Nico Hulkenberg.

Following the Madring round, Antonelli commands the drivers' standings with 292 points, well ahead of teammate George Russell on 211 points. Lewis Hamilton sits third with 191 points, while Lando Norris holds fourth on 186 points. Mercedes leads the constructors' championship with 503 points as the F1 calendar prepares for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku on September 26, 2026.
