The International Olympic Committee has launched its first comprehensive Trustworthy AI Framework aimed at establishing ethical guardrails and operational standards for artificial intelligence across the Olympic Movement. Developed in collaboration with consulting partner Deloitte, the initiative introduces practical principles and self-assessment tools designed to govern how sports organizations deploy emerging digital technologies.

Seven Core Principles for Responsible Adoption
The newly introduced framework is anchored by seven foundational tenets intended to guide organizations through every stage of an AI system lifecycle, from initial procurement to ongoing deployment. These principles require stakeholders to prioritize safe and secure operations, protect personal athlete data with strict confidentiality, and deliver robust reliability across all applications.
Additional mandates emphasize operational transparency, clear accountability frameworks, equitable fairness across competitions, and long-term environmental sustainability. According to the IOC, these standards apply uniformly whether an organization is just beginning to explore basic automation or deeply embedding advanced machine learning into its daily administrative structures.
Collaborative Development and Stakeholder Engagement
Formulated through extensive consultation with more than 200 leaders spanning sports administration, technology development, and governance, the framework draws heavily on multi-sector expertise. Deloitte contributed specialized advisory experience in strategy and risk management to translate complex governance challenges into structured operational guidance.

To bridge high-level governance principles with day-to-day execution, the framework includes a structured Trustworthy AI Checklist. This practical self-assessment tool directs organizations to evaluate inherent operational risks before deploying control mechanisms, embed the seven core principles into ongoing workflows, and utilize provided training materials to refine their digital strategies.
