Gautam Gambhir Reveals Sleepless Night Over Dropping Sanju Samson for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi

India head coach Gautam Gambhir has disclosed that dropping Sanju Samson during the team's July T20I series in England caused him severe emotional distress, marking the only night during his two-year coaching tenure that he was unable to sleep. Samson, who earned Player of the Tournament honors during India's T20 World Cup triumph earlier in the year, was omitted from the playing XI following the opening match in Manchester.

Speaking to JioStar ahead of India's home bilateral series against the West Indies, Gambhir explained that the omission was driven by tactical urgency and the exceptional form of teenage newcomer Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who made his international debut in that series opener. India had dropped that initial fixture against England, prompting the team management to seek an immediate top-order platform.

The young cricketer played his inaugural first-class match at age twelve and secured a contract worth Rs one point ten crore with the Rajasthan Royals at the Jeddah mega auction. Additionally, he recorded a fifty-eight-ball century against the Australia under-nineteen team in Chennai, setting a record as the quickest Indian to notch a youth Test hundred.

Gambhir detailed the private dialogue he held with Samson following the decision, emphasizing that the conversation was conducted with complete honesty. He noted that leaving out a proven performer who had anchored India's global tournament campaign was a wrenching choice, but one necessitated by match-winning requirements.

In remarks reported by JioStar and referenced across sports wires, Gambhir stated, "In two years of my journey, that was the only night I could not sleep and I told this to Sanju because I knew that it was probably the toughest decision in my coaching tenure in a T20 format because someone who was player of the tournament, and then you have to leave him out after three or four games."

The head coach added that Sooryavanshi's breakout form at the top of the order offered a temporary solution to structural requirements. According to Gambhir, Samson accepted the explanation professionally and took the omission in good spirits.
