Defending champions India prepare to face familiar rivals Bangladesh in the women's cricket semifinal of the Asian Games in Nisshin, Japan, on Sunday. The Women in Blue advanced following a facile eight-wicket victory over hosts Japan on Friday, where they chased down a modest target with 15 overs to spare on a pitch offering significant turn and bounce.

Bangladesh reached the semifinal round by virtue of their higher International Cricket Council ranking after their quarterfinal fixture against China was abandoned entirely due to a wet outfield without a ball bowled.

India hold a commanding psychological and statistical edge in the bilateral rivalry, having won 22 out of their 25 previous T20 international meetings against Bangladesh. The defending champions have claimed victory in their last nine consecutive encounters across all formats, including a 40-run triumph during the recent Asia Cup semifinal and a successful run chase of 137 in 16.5 overs during the T20 World Cup earlier this year. Bangladesh's last victory against India occurred in 2023.

While India enter the fixture riding a six-match T20I winning streak that extends back to their defeat against Australia in June, Bangladesh have experienced mixed form with a sequence of two wins and three losses in their last five completed matches.

India welcomed back seasoned offspinner Shreyanka Patil against Japan following a three-month injury layoff due to an ankle problem. Patil joined an economical spin attack led by left-arm spinner Shree Charani and Deepti Sharma, alongside seamers Nandani Sharma and Kranti Gaud. Opening batter Smriti Mandhana and captain Harmanpreet Kaur did not bat in the tournament opener as explosive opener Shafali Verma single-handedly overhauled the target after contributing two wickets with the ball.

For Bangladesh, the batting unit aims to correct issues regarding dot-ball accumulation. During their Asia Cup semifinal meeting against India, Bangladesh played out 64 dot balls before falling 40 runs short of the target. Captain Nigar Sultana, Sobhana Mostary, and Shorna Akter will shoulder scoring responsibilities, while opening bowler Marufa Akter leads their attack with 24 wickets this year alongside senior spinners Nahida Akter and Rabeya Khan.
