The Board of Control for Cricket in India has outlined a deliberate long-term development strategy for teenage prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, urging the 15-year-old batter to model his career on legendary figures like Sachin Tendulkar. Following a high-level review meeting in Mumbai, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia emphasized that the board is closely monitoring every step of the young left-hander's progression to ensure he avoids the pitfalls of becoming a short-lived sensation.
Sooryavanshi's rapid ascent has captured national attention, stretching from an impressive IPL 2026 campaign to becoming India's youngest men's international debutant. While his initial T20I outings against England presented steep learning curves, the teenager rebounded strongly with 151 runs across three matches against Zimbabwe, cementing his status as a premier emerging talent in India's white-ball setup.
Long-Term Vision And Board Oversight
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia addressed the media in Mumbai, making it clear that the board's primary objective is careful nurturing rather than rushing the young player's peak. Saikia explicitly stated that the board views Sooryavanshi's career through a serious and protective lens, monitoring his workload and development from every angle to ensure sustained success.
“We want Vaibhav Sooryavanshi or any player of his stature to continue and serve like Sachin Tendulkar did for the country or other players who in the past became legends,” Saikia said. He reiterated that the board remains highly cautious about managing young talent, noting their intent to ensure that players do not fade into fleeting one-season wonders after early international exposure.
Duleep Trophy Dilemma And Gambhir's Call
Beyond international white-ball fixtures, Sooryavanshi has continued to turn heads in domestic red-ball cricket, most recently scoring 92 off 81 balls in the Duleep Trophy semi-final against Central Zone. That knock made him the youngest batter in the tournament's history to register a half-century, before he added a brisk 40-run knock in the second innings to help East Zone secure a place in the final.
However, Sooryavanshi's participation in the upcoming Duleep Trophy final against South Zone at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai remains uncertain. Because he has been named in India's T20I squad for the upcoming series against Afghanistan—which begins in New Delhi on September 13— squad members are required to report to the capital by September 9 or 10. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar is scheduled to travel to Chennai to assess players during the final, but Sooryavanshi's presence depends entirely on whether India head coach Gautam Gambhir grants permission for him to play.

With upcoming fixtures against Afghanistan approaching, cricket analysts have begun evaluating how the team management should deploy its batting resources. Former India cricketer Deep Dasgupta has suggested experimenting with a fresh opening partnership for Sooryavanshi during the upcoming series.

Former India captain and current COE head VVS Laxman is taking a hands-on approach with this targeted group, overseeing their ongoing training regimens and advanced skill development. In addition to his domestic commitments, Sooryavanshi is slated to travel as part of India's squad for the upcoming Asian Games under Laxman's coaching oversight, ensuring continuous high-performance exposure across different formats.
