The National Stock Exchange of India disclosed a comprehensive restructuring of its closing price discovery mechanism alongside updated trading hours for equity derivatives. Issued through two regulatory circulars on November 6, the revised operational framework implements policy directives established by the Securities and Exchange Board of India. The regulatory changes align with guidelines released by the capital markets regulator on October 15 regarding settlement methodologies and auction timelines. The exchange indicated that the majority of the revised trading provisions will become operational across domestic market segments starting December 7, 2026. A core structural modification shortens the duration of the daily Closing Auction Session to exactly 10 minutes across equity cash markets.

Condensed Closing Auction Session Modalities

Under the updated operational schedule, the Closing Auction Session will take place between 3:30 pm and 3:40 pm on every trading session. The opening minute from 3:30 pm to 3:31 pm is allocated for determining reference baseline prices and executing the operational transition from continuous trading. Market participants can enter, modify, and cancel both limit orders and market orders during the initial phase spanning 3:31 pm to 3:36 pm. Between 3:36 pm and 3:40 pm, the order window restricts activity exclusively to limit orders, incorporating random system closure during the final two minutes. Order matching and formal execution confirmation will proceed between 3:40 pm and 3:45 pm, establishing authoritative closing asset valuations. The revised framework mandates an operating price band of 3% around the calculated reference price during the closing auction. Aligning stock futures price bands with the closing auction session band and suspending dynamic flexing between 3:30 PM and 3:45 PM prevents stock futures from drifting outside the cash auction range while closing prices are formed, according to Oquilia. The closing auction session reference price is determined as the volume-weighted average price of the last 15 minutes of continuous trading, according to Oquilia. The randomized system close between 3:38 PM and 3:40 PM removes certainty over the final second of order collection, curtailing the incentive for market participants to drop large orders at the final instant to move closing prices, according to Oquilia. A separate cash-market post-close trading session will run from 3:50 PM to 4:00 PM to execute trades at the official closing prices, according to 5paisa. Final settlement prices for expiring index and stock derivatives will be calculated using volume-weighted average prices from the last 30 minutes of continuous trading between 3:00 PM and 3:30 PM rather than closing auction prices, according to Zerodha.

Derivatives Trading Hour Extensions and Expiry Schedules

The exchange also introduced extended operational hours within the equity derivatives segment, permitting contracts to trade until 3:45 pm. Stock derivatives contracts will continue trading through 3:45 pm across all regular market days, including contractual expiration sessions. For index derivatives contracts expiring on a specific settlement date, trading will conclude at 3:30 pm to facilitate orderly contract expiration. Non-expiring index futures and options series will remain accessible for active trading throughout the extended session until 3:45 pm. Subsequent operational enhancements regarding the handling of unexecuted limit orders from continuous trading will take effect on February 8, 2027.

Market Microstructure and Liquidity Convergence

The overhaul aims to enhance price discovery precision, dampening manipulative volatility spikes that historically occurred during closing minutes. By compressing auction intervals and extending derivative windows, market authorities intend to harmonize cash and derivatives liquidity pools. Institutional trading desks and algorithmic market makers are modifying automated execution algorithms to accommodate the condensed order-matching cycle. Brokers expect the refined framework to improve settlement transparency for retail and institutional derivative portfolios across expiry sessions. The market structure reforms underscore Indian exchanges' ongoing modernization efforts to align domestic trading microstructure with international standards.
