Nomura Initiates Coverage on Meesho With Reduce Rating and 28 Percent Downside Risk

Foreign brokerage Nomura has initiated coverage on e-commerce firm Meesho with a Reduce rating, issuing a target price of Rs 167 per share that implies a potential downside of more than 28% from its previous closing level. The brokerage highlighted that while Meesho operates an efficient asset-light model capturing approximately 90% of India's online value shoppers, its current market valuation leaves virtually no room for execution missteps.
Meesho's financial performance shows narrowing losses, with the company reporting a loss of Rs 133 crore for the quarter ended June 30, 2026, marking an improvement from the Rs 289 crore loss recorded in the corresponding period last year. However, corporate management expects net merchandise value growth to decelerate during the July to September quarter as marketing expenditures scale up ahead of the festive shopping season.

Valuation Premiums and Competitive Pressures

Nomura's research note pointed out that Meesho trades at a significant valuation premium compared to listed peers Eternal and Swiggy, even though those competitors maintain faster net merchandise value growth and cash-generating food delivery divisions. The brokerage set its DCF-based target price of Rs 167 based on an enterprise value to net merchandise value multiple of approximately 1.1 times on fiscal year 2028 estimates. Key upside risks cited in the research include faster user additions, an average order value decline of less than 2%, stronger advertising margins, and a reduction in competitive intensity.
Intensifying competition from horizontal e-commerce operators and quick commerce networks remains a central risk factor. Nomura noted that major players such as Amazon and Flipkart are aggressively expanding into value commerce and quick commerce segments. Flipkart's May 2026 relaunch of Shopsy with a gamified interface targeting Gen Z consumers exemplifies this strategic push. Furthermore, quick commerce operators are pushing beyond grocery delivery into general merchandise across metropolitan areas, heightening overlap without requiring Meesho to establish costly dark store infrastructure.

Asset-Light Architecture and Operational Strengths

Despite the bearish stance, Nomura praised several structural strengths within Meesho's operating model. The platform relies on its in-house Valmo logistics network, connecting approximately 18,000 logistics partners to maintain industry-low fulfilment costs without owning physical inventory or warehouses. Artificial intelligence innovations implemented across the platform have also served as a primary catalyst for rapid user acquisition among value-conscious consumers.
Projections from the brokerage indicate that logistics spreads and advertising revenues could expand from approximately 1.5% and 3% of net merchandise value in the first quarter of fiscal 2027 to 2.8% and 5% by fiscal 2030, respectively. These operating efficiencies are projected to lift Meesho's adjusted EBITDA margin from negative 1.2% in the first quarter of fiscal 2027 to positive 2.9% by fiscal 2030.

Festive Season Shift and Quarterly Outlook

The projected deceleration in net merchandise value growth for the July to September quarter is primarily attributed to the calendar shift of Meesho's flagship Mega Blockbuster Sale. The promotional event was moved from the second quarter to the October to December quarter for fiscal 2027. Consequently, the company anticipates that growth metrics will rebound sharply during the third quarter, smoothing out inter-quarter comparisons once both periods are evaluated together.
Market participants continue to monitor brokerage sentiment closely following the initiation. Other recent institutional updates include UBS raising its price target on Meesho to Rs 260 from Rs 210 with a Buy rating on September 22, citing stronger margin expansion. Trading activity on Thursday concluded with Meesho shares closing lower at Rs 232 on the BSE, ahead of the trading session reacting to Nomura's newly published coverage.
