Indian equity markets are bracing for continued downward pressure as benchmark indices face mounting technical exhaustion heading into the new trading week. According to expert technical assessments, the probability of the Nifty 50 index breaching immediate support levels remains high, driven by persistent selling momentum and a broader deterioration in chart structures across frontline sectors.
Market participants have watched the benchmark index conclude four consecutive weeks in negative territory, underscoring intense overhead supply. Sudeep Shah, Head of Technical and Derivatives Research at SBI Securities, noted that the index has slipped below its rising channel on daily charts, reflecting a sharp erosion of short-term bullish control.
Bearish Technical Bias Dominates Nifty 50
The broader structural outlook for the Nifty 50 continues to favor sellers as the benchmark trades below crucial short- and medium-term moving averages. Key exponential moving averages, including the 20-day, 50-day, and 100-day variants, have begun to slope downward, offering visual confirmation of fading price strength. Momentum indicators further reinforce this cautious landscape, with the daily Relative Strength Index hovering near the 40 threshold and lagging behind its 9-day moving average.
External headwinds have compounded domestic technical vulnerabilities. Rising US 10-year Treasury yields, persistent geopolitical tensions, and elevated Brent crude oil quotations have collectively drained risk appetite among institutional investors. Although the index attempted a modest recovery after tapping the 23,786 level, analysts characterize the rebound as a superficial technical correction rather than a genuine trend reversal.
Support and Resistance Frontiers
Immediate support is anchored within the 23,750-23,700 zone, a critical threshold aligned with the 61.8 percent Fibonacci retracement of the prior upward swing from 23,070 to 24,774. A confirmed breakdown beneath this region risks accelerating downward momentum toward 23,500, with secondary downside targets extending to 23,300.
Conversely, upside recovery faces stiff resistance at the 24,150-24,200 band, where the 50-day and 100-day EMAs converge. Unless buyers can orchestrate a sustained close above this barrier, the prevailing bearish dominance is expected to dictate near-term market direction, leaving the 23,600-23,500 zone highly vulnerable to a test.
Divergent Performance in Smallcaps and Midcaps
Beneath the headline indices, broader market participation has exhibited stark divergence. While the Nifty Midcap 100 index underperformed by shedding 1.55 percent and forming a bearish weekly candle, the Nifty Smallcap 100 counteracted the broader trend by scaling fresh all-time highs.
The small-cap segment found robust buying support near an upward-sloping trendline, maintaining a solid bullish undertone. Meanwhile, the mid-cap gauge slipped below its 20-day EMA, entering a phase of range-bound consolidation between 62,400 support and 64,000 resistance.
Sectoral Resilience and Stock Selections
Sector-specific charts present selective opportunities despite the macro weakness. The Nifty Pharma index maintains its primary uptrend through a sequence of higher highs and higher lows, though short-term momentum has moderated into consolidation.
For tactical positioning, analysts highlight specific equities showing relative strength. Yatharth Hospital and Trauma Care Services broke out of a multi-month consolidation range on surging volumes, while KPR Mill displayed strong pullback characteristics from its 34-day EMA, signaling healthy underlying buying interest.
