Moody's Raises India FY27 GDP Growth Forecast to 7% on West Asia Resilience
Credit rating agency Moody's on Friday raised India's real GDP growth forecast to 7% from 6% for the current fiscal year, pointing to the domestic economy's underlying resilience amid the ongoing West Asia conflict. This projection positions the country ahead of all other G-20 economies and similarly rated emerging market sovereigns, outpacing both the International Monetary Fund's forecast of 6.5% and the World Bank's projection of 6.4% for the broader period, according to established reporting. Structural macroeconomic risks, however, remain closely monitored by institutional observers.
Despite positive near-term momentum, the ratings agency cautioned that persistent risks surrounding global energy prices and food inflation tied to El Niño pressures continue to threaten consumption patterns and broader economic expansion. Moody's noted that elevated fuel costs directly increase the cost of imported crude oil, leading to higher outlays for fuel subsidies such as liquefied petroleum gas and kerosene while widening the fiscal deficit. Sustained high fuel costs can further strain public finances by placing additional pressure on the central government to intervene with targeted support measures.
Fiscal Consolidation and Expenditure Pressures
The agency observed that India's fiscal policy response to the external shock originating from the Middle East has remained largely muted thus far. However, analysts indicated that a sustained upward trajectory in international energy markets could complicate the central government's medium-term fiscal deficit targets.
Concurrently, elevated capital expenditures directed toward defense and infrastructure development may constrain the pace of ongoing fiscal consolidation. These sustained public investments have served as primary catalysts for domestic industrial activity, offsetting underlying weakness across mining and consumer-facing services.
Growth Drivers and Broader Standing
The upward revision follows national accounts data released last month showing India's economy expanded by 7.8% during the April-June quarter. That performance outpaced broader market expectations, driven by robust investment and manufacturing activity that successfully insulated the broader economy against external headwinds.
Moody's emphasized that even with the positive forecast adjustment, external vulnerabilities persist across developing markets. The agency continues to monitor global commodity channels and regional security developments to assess potential spillovers into domestic price stability and consumer demand.
