Indian Defence Stocks Surge Following ₹1.1 Lakh Crore DAC Procurement Approvals

Indian Defence Stocks Surge Following ₹1.1 Lakh Crore DAC Procurement Approvals
⚠️For informational purposes only; not investment advice.
The Bottom Line
  • •The Defence Acquisition Council approved ₹1.1 lakh crore in military acquisition proposals, with 98% directed to domestic manufacturers.
  • •GE Vernova T&D India emerged as an L1 bidder for a Power Grid Corporation project, driving a 7% share price surge.
  • •ESDS Software Solution shares surged 201% from their IPO price within three sessions, hitting consecutive upper circuits.
Indian defence equities rallied strongly during Tuesday's trading session, outperforming a weak broader market after the Defence Acquisition Council cleared major military acquisition proposals. The Nifty India Defence Index advanced 1.3% while the benchmark Nifty dipped 0.4%, propelled by substantial domestic procurement commitments from the central government.
The buying momentum extended across multiple high-profile defence counters, including Astra Microwave Products, BEML, and Data Patterns, as investors responded to fresh policy catalysts and substantial state-backed order pipelines. Market participants closely monitored the structural expansion of the domestic defence manufacturing sector amid accelerating domestic procurement targets.

Defence Acquisition Council Clears ₹1.1 Lakh Crore Proposals

The broad-based market rally in defence counters followed a meeting of the Defence Acquisition Council chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, which accorded Acceptance of Necessity for acquisition proposals valued at approximately ₹1,10,000 crore. These procurement approvals encompass critical equipment and platforms designated for the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force.
Highlighting the heavy domestic orientation of the cleared acquisitions, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh stated in a tweet: "Of the total AoNs accorded, approximately 98% of procurements will be made from the Indian Industry. It shows our commitment towards developing a strong defence Industrial base in India." The approvals feature specialized systems including Chemical Biological Radiological and Nuclear Recce Vehicles, High Mobility Vehicles, Self-Propelled Mechanical Mine Layers, Advanced Light Helicopters, and Arudhra Radars.

Sector Performance and Brokerage Outlook

Brokerage evaluations following the policy announcements highlighted a substantial expansion in the total addressable market for domestic manufacturing firms. Motilal Oswal Financial Services noted that cumulative DAC approvals for fiscal year 2027 had reached ₹1.62 lakh crore, with total approvals spanning fiscal year 2025 through early fiscal year 2027 touching ₹13 lakh crore.
Brokerage analysts maintained positive stances on key sector bellwethers, retaining buy ratings for Bharat Electronics Ltd with a target price of ₹530 and Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd with a target price of ₹5,800. Ratings for Bharat Dynamics and Zen Technologies were maintained as neutral based on two-year forward earnings valuations, while Astra Microwave Products retained a buy recommendation with an unchanged target price of ₹1,900.

GE Vernova T&D India and Adani Power Developments

Beyond traditional defence counters, other industrial and infrastructure equities captured significant market attention following major corporate and project milestones. GE Vernova T&D India shares jumped as much as 7% during the session, touching an intraday high of ₹4,704.40 after the company announced it had emerged as the lowest bidder for a transmission project from the Power Grid Corporation of India.
Adani Power reported an improved Environmental, Social, and Governance score of 66 from NSE Sustainability, maintaining its leading position among Indian thermal and integrated energy companies. In a separate regulatory filing, the company confirmed that the Committee of Creditors of GVK Energy had approved its resolution plan under the Corporate Insolvency Resolution Process, with Adani Power receiving a Letter of Intent for a 330 MW hydroelectric power plant in Uttarakhand.

ESDS Software Solution Listing Rally

In the primary market segment, ESDS Software Solution shares continued an extraordinary post-listing ascent, hitting a 20% upper circuit for consecutive sessions. The stock opened at ₹1,187.95 and surged to its upper circuit limit of ₹1,285.55, marking a staggering 201% increase from its initial public offering price of ₹429 in just three trading sessions.
The explosive debut and subsequent circuit locks reflect robust investor appetite for niche technology and software listings on Indian bourses, significantly inflating capital allocations for early participants. Market analysts continue to monitor volume patterns across recent debuts as primary market activity maintains high retail and institutional participation.

Future Order Finalisation and Sector Milestones

As the domestic defence and industrial sectors absorb the impact of large-scale capital allocations, market participants are shifting focus toward the formal finalisation of pending major tenders. Analysts emphasise that execution timelines and contract conversions for public sector undertakings will dictate medium-term valuation sustainability.
Regulatory approvals remain a critical prerequisite for newly minted corporate resolutions, such as Adani Power's acquisition of GVK Energy assets, which requires clearance from the National Company Law Tribunal. Broader macroeconomic factors, including crude oil price fluctuations and foreign institutional capital flows, will continue to influence broader market sentiment across Indian equities.
