Indian sovereign bond prices surged this week as benchmark yields registered their sharpest weekly decline in seven years, outpacing emerging Asian peers amid a steep tumble in global crude oil prices. The yield on the benchmark 6.94% 2036 paper settled at 7.1898% on Friday, rising 2 basis points on the day but declining 22 basis points across the week, marking its strongest performance since October 2019. The bond market rally followed the Democratic victory in the US midterm elections, which renewed hopes for a resolution to the Iran war and drove weekly oil prices down by 17%. Cheaper crude substantially eases inflationary pressure for India, which imports approximately 90% of its petroleum requirements, reducing fiscal strain and supporting state revenues.

Benchmark Yield Drop and Currency Appreciation

Falling energy import bills also buoyed the domestic currency, with the Indian rupee appreciating past 94 per US dollar to settle at 93.9050, recording a 1.1% gain across the week. AU Small Finance Bank Senior Vice President Debendra Kumar Dash observed that currency appreciation diminishes the Reserve Bank of India's need to permit elevated sovereign yields to protect the rupee. FX Smart founder Nilesh Ved projected that benchmark yields could soften further, suggesting the 10-year yield may soon test levels below the 7.10% threshold. Foreign portfolio investors returned to Indian debt markets, purchasing nearly 52 billion rupees (approximately $552 million) of sovereign paper in their largest net weekly inflow since July. The Ministry of Finance and RBI finalized the H2 FY27 borrowing plan to raise ₹7,86,000 crore through 23 weekly auctions, according to ChartForest.

Derivative Swap Repricing and Foreign Inflows

Market sentiment also tracked declining yields on US sovereign debt, where the 10-year Treasury yield shed approximately 10 basis points, enhancing the yield spread appeal of Indian debt instruments. Plunging oil prices rewrote interest rate expectations across derivatives desks, with overnight indexed swap rates now pricing between 50 and 75 basis points of potential tightening, down from 125 basis points previously. In swap markets, the one-year OIS rate dropped 39 basis points over the week to 6.33%, while the two-year swap contract eased 40 basis points to 6.34%. The five-year derivative rate fell 38 basis points to close at 6.48%, confirming widespread market positioning for looser monetary policy.

Forex Reserve Trajectory and Macroeconomic Outlook

Central bank balance sheet disclosures indicated that India's foreign exchange reserves declined by $2.691 billion to reach $717.056 billion during the week ended October 30. Market analysts attributed the reserve decline to foreign currency non-resident bank deployments alongside prior dollar sales executed by the central bank before oil prices collapsed. The convergence of easing oil expenditures, foreign portfolio inflows, and strengthening exchange rates has established a constructive backdrop for Indian sovereign fixed-income markets heading into the fiscal second half. Cumulative Fully Accessible Route inflows for FY27 remained positive at about ₹43,075 crore, even after foreign portfolio investors sold ₹5,615 crore of government securities in October 2026, according to Ventura Securities.

Background

Foreign holdings in eligible Indian government securities fell to ₹3,56,394 crore as on October 31, 2026, under the Fully Accessible Route framework, according to Ventura Securities.

The benchmark 6.94% 2036 bond ended at 7.2994% in late October 2026, according to PDC ICAI.

Bank of Baroda Research documented that the average banking system liquidity surplus fell sharply to Rs 2.4 lakh crore in October 2026 from Rs 7.8 lakh crore in September 2026, creating tighter liquidity conditions, according to TradingView.
