IDBI Bank Employees Stage Two-Day Nationwide Strike Opposing Privatization to Fairfax

A nationwide two-day labor strike involving over 10,000 IDBI Bank personnel is scheduled to commence on November 2, The Hawk reported. The industrial action was organized by the United Forum of IDBI Officers and Employees to protest the central government's proposed privatization of the financial institution. Union representatives demanded that the government scrap the divestment initiative, arguing that the bank's successful recovery was achieved through public funding rather than private management. The demonstration highlights growing labor friction regarding state-owned enterprise restructuring across India's financial sector.
Capital Injections and Six-Year Financial Recovery
Employee organizations emphasized that the bank required significant capital support between 2016 and 2020 following the recognition of non-performing assets, The Hawk reported. During that vulnerable operational period, the central government and the Life Insurance Corporation of India infused more than 46,000 crore rupees to sustain stability. Staff members maintained client relationships, preserved operational continuity, and rebuilt depositor confidence during those restructuring years. The labor forum noted that IDBI Bank produced cumulative net profits exceeding 30,100 crore rupees over the last six years while sharply reducing non-performing assets.
Following the strategic buyer announcement, ICRA Ratings placed IDBI Bank's long-term ratings of [ICRA] AA on Rating Watch with Developing Implications, according to Sahi Markets.
Proposed Fairfax Acquisition and Valuation Objections
Under current balance sheet metrics, the bank's net non-performing asset ratio stands at 0.16 percent alongside a capital adequacy ratio of 26.38 percent, The Hawk noted. Despite these robust financial indicators, the central administration is proceeding with transactions to transfer operational control to Canada's Fairfax Group. The Union Cabinet sanctioned the strategic divestment of a 60.72 percent equity stake to a subsidiary of Fairfax Financial Holdings for approximately 52,878.08 crore rupees, according to The Sunday Guardian. Union leadership criticized the proposed valuation as inadequate and demanded that the central government retain at least 51 percent majority ownership in the institution.
The 60.72% stake sale in IDBI Bank comprises 30.48% held by the Government of India and 30.24% held by LIC, with LIC retaining approximately 19% and the Government retaining around 15%, according to Sahi Markets.
Operational Contingencies and Digital Banking Continuity
To minimize retail disruptions, IDBI Bank issued customer advisories reassuring account holders that alternative digital platforms will remain functional during the strike, The Sunday Guardian noted. Mobile banking applications, internet banking portals, and Unified Payments Interface channels will continue processing eligible financial transactions throughout the two-day period. Furthermore, bank management instituted free cash withdrawals from non-IDBI Bank automated teller machines on November 2 and 3 to support patrons, according to The Sunday Guardian. Furthermore, the United Forum of Bank Unions urged financial sector staff across India to wear protest badges and join solidarity demonstrations, Moneycontrol reported. The employee forum warned that union agitations could intensify if the government refuses to halt divestment negotiations and engage in direct consultations regarding worker welfare.
