HDFC Bank Shares Rise as Lender Submits CEO Candidates to RBI
HDFC Bank shares rose by approximately 3% on Monday as the lender officially initiated its CEO succession process by submitting two candidates to the Reserve Bank of India. While the bank has not publicly disclosed the names, reports indicate the shortlist includes deputy managing director Kaizad Bharucha and an external candidate. Prospective external picks reportedly include ICICI Prudential Life CEO Anup Bagchi and Citi India CEO K Balasubramanian.
Succession and Governance Context
The move marks a significant step in addressing the governance concerns that have weighed on the bank since March 2026, when former part-time Chairman Atanu Chakraborty resigned. Chakraborty had cited practices within the bank that did not align with his personal values and ethics, triggering a period of volatility and a selloff in the company's shares. The bank has since sought to stabilize its leadership structure, with the board also proposing the elevation of Jimmy Tata to the role of whole-time director to expand the board to four seats.
Brokerage Outlook and Market Performance
International brokerages have maintained bullish stances on the stock, viewing the leadership transition as a potential catalyst for a re-rating. Nomura noted that while an internal appointment like Bharucha would ensure continuity, a credible external candidate could offer a cleaner slate to drive a strategic reset. Nomura maintains a buy rating with a target price of Rs 950. Bernstein and Macquarie have both reiterated outperform ratings with higher target prices of Rs 1,150, implying an upside potential of over 62% from recent levels.
Despite the optimism from analysts, the stock has faced significant headwinds, declining 29% so far in 2026. Technical analysts at Angel One have described the current setup as uninspiring, noting that while the stock is displaying oversold readings that could allow for a short-term bounce, there are no meaningful signs of a broader trend reversal at this stage. The bank's shares closed at Rs 708.25 on the NSE prior to the latest session's gains.
