Coal India Shares Jump 4% on Record October Offtake and SECL IPO Filing

Shares of state-run miner Coal India jumped 4% in Monday trade after the public sector enterprise reported record coal dispatch figures for October, Economic Times reported. The equity advance propelled Coal India shares toward Rs 407 each, lifting the miner's total market capitalisation past the Rs 2.5 lakh crore threshold, Economic Times noted. Total monthly coal supplies crossed the 70 million tonnes threshold for the first time in corporate history, reaching 70.3 MT compared to the previous peak of 69.4 MT achieved in March 2026. The volume represents a 19% expansion over the 59.2 MT dispatched during October in the prior fiscal year despite operational interruptions from unseasonal monsoon rainfall and cyclone activity.
Record Monthly Offtake and Thermal Power Deliveries
Supplies dispatched directly to domestic thermal power generators crossed the 57 MT mark for the first time, hitting 57.1 MT in October, Economic Times reported. The thermal fuel delivery surpassed the previous monthly dispatch record of 56.5 MT established in May 2024, Economic Times stated. Coal India subsidiary Mahanadi Coalfields Limited achieved a milestone by surpassing the 20 MT monthly dispatch threshold for the first time. Railway logistical movements achieved peak monthly records by dispatching an average of 310 freight trains daily to domestic thermal power stations, Economic Times noted.
Logistical Throughput and Equity Performance
Company executives noted that surpassing peak March operating metrics during October positions thermal utilities for healthy fuel inventory accretion ahead of winter power peaks, Economic Times reported. Stock performance reflects steady recovery, with Coal India shares gaining 1.5% in 2026 and delivering 5% gains over twelve months while the broader benchmark index contracted. Over longer investment horizons, the state miner has advanced 32% over three years and generated returns exceeding 140% over five years. The record operational performance demonstrates enhanced production efficiency across opencast and underground mining subsidiaries.
SECL Subsidiary Public Listing and Share Offloading
In a companion corporate development, subsidiary South Eastern Coalfields Limited filed its draft red herring prospectus with market regulator SEBI for an initial public offering, CNBC TV18 reported. The proposed capital offering will be entirely an offer for sale, with promoter Coal India planning to offload up to 66.81 crore equity shares, CNBC TV18 noted. The public listing of SECL forms part of a broader strategic blueprint to unlock value from mining subsidiaries by listing them on domestic exchanges, CNBC TV18 stated. Market participants anticipate that proceeds from subsidiary divestments and sustained fuel offtake will support elevated dividend distributions and capital expenditure programs.
In September 2026, Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd filed preliminary papers with Sebi for an IPO to sell a 10 per cent stake, following the maiden public offering floated by sister subsidiary Bharat Coking Coal Ltd earlier in 2026, according to Rediff.
