Applied Materials Pledges $5 Billion for India Chip Hub at SEMICON Summit
Applied Materials has announced a $5 billion investment over the next decade to build advanced research infrastructure and expand domestic supply chains in India under its India Vision 2035 framework. The announcement was made on Thursday at the SEMICON India 2026 summit in New Delhi, an international gathering that drew over 600 companies and delegates from 52 countries as the nation accelerates its domestic semiconductor manufacturing strategy.
The capital commitment arrives as global supply chains navigate severe pressures from artificial intelligence infrastructure demand and geopolitical trade friction. While major economies impose technology export curbs, Indian officials have pitched the domestic market as a stable manufacturing alternative. Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed attendees during the opening of the three-day conference, emphasizing that the country is aggressively upgrading its industrial base to integrate into global electronics supply chains.
Supply Chain Expansion and Vendor Pledges
Prabhu Raja, president of the Semiconductor Products Group at Applied Materials, detailed plans that include a proposed 140-acre advanced semiconductor research facility alongside a target to multiply domestic supply-chain capacity tenfold by 2035. Industry observers noted these projections represent long-term strategic targets rather than immediate capital outlays.
Other major suppliers used the summit to announce substantial capital commitments. Lam Research reported a planned investment of approximately 10,000 crore rupees to establish its first silicon-component manufacturing unit and advanced research center in the country. Meanwhile, Fujifilm outlined an 800 crore rupee greenfield semiconductor materials facility, slated to begin operations in two phases starting in October 2026 with commercial production targeted for fiscal 2028.
Production Milestones and Manufacturing Realities
Prime Minister Modi formally acknowledged the commencement of commercial production at two facilities located in Mohali and Surat, operated by Continental Device India Limited and Suchi Semicon, respectively. Additionally, Micron Technology CEO Sanjay Mehrotra confirmed that finished dynamic random-access memory and NAND flash units are actively shipping globally from the company's assembly and test operations in Sanand.
Despite these packaging and assembly milestones, India's broader front-end fabrication initiatives face structural execution hurdles. The country's flagship high-volume wafer fabrication plant, a $10 billion project undertaken by Tata Electronics in Gujarat, has experienced commercial production delays of nearly two years. According to reporting cited from industry analyses, these setbacks stem primarily from complex logistical challenges in securing specialized equipment and integrating a massive new semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem.
Workforce Targets and Ecosystem Funding
To underpin the expanding manufacturing base, Union Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw outlined an ambitious human capital target to train 100,000 workers for cleanroom, technician, and factory floor positions. This workforce development program also incorporates structured support for at least 200 chip-design startups and enterprises.
Complementing the public training initiatives, Tata Electronics chief executive Randhir Thakur announced plans to sign 16 memoranda of understanding during the conference with international vendors including Nexperia, BESI, JSR, Fujifilm, L&T Semiconductors, and Inox Air Products. These vendor pacts are designed to anchor the domestic supply ecosystem required to support the India Semiconductor Mission, which maintains an active financial outlay of 127,500 crore rupees distributed across six focal areas spanning design, machinery, materials, fabrication, assembly, and testing.
