Apple Pay Prepares India Market Entry With Axis Bank Partnership
Apple is preparing to launch its digital payment service, Apple Pay, in India next month, marking a significant expansion into one of the world's largest smartphone markets. The rollout will begin with a partnership with Mumbai-based Axis Bank, the country's fourth-largest credit card issuer, according to three sources familiar with the matter. The service will allow iPhone users to perform tap-and-pay transactions using tokenized card details stored on their devices, leveraging biometric authentication features like Face ID and Touch ID.
Strategic Phased Expansion
Industry observers note that Apple is adopting a phased approach to its India entry, prioritizing direct, bank-by-bank agreements rather than a broad, simultaneous launch. While Axis Bank is the initial partner, reports indicate that Apple has held discussions with larger private sector competitors, including HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank. These negotiations are reportedly ongoing, with commercial terms yet to be finalized between the parties. The company's strategy mirrors its historical rollout patterns in other international markets, where it gradually increased lender support over time.
Competitive Landscape in India
Apple Pay enters a digital payments ecosystem that is currently dominated by the Unified Payments Interface (UPI). UPI-based platforms, which facilitate transfers via QR codes and phone numbers, account for approximately 84% of India's digital payment volume. Despite this saturation, Apple's footprint in the region has grown, with its share of the Indian smartphone market doubling to 8% since 2022, according to data from Counterpoint Research.
Regulatory and Technical Readiness
The technical foundation for this launch was established last year when the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) permitted biometric authentication for card-based transactions. This regulatory shift was critical, as it enabled Apple to integrate its proprietary security features with Indian banking infrastructure. Axis Bank, which reported 16.26 million active credit cards as of July, will serve as the primary gateway for the service's debut. Representatives for Apple, HDFC Bank, and ICICI Bank did not provide comment on the ongoing negotiations, while Axis Bank declined to comment on the reported partnership.
