United States Ambassador to India Sergio Gor has announced that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is slated to travel to the United States in December to participate in the upcoming G20 Leaders' Summit. Speaking on the sidelines of the IX USISPF Leadership Summit 2026, Ambassador Gor stated that the White House looks forward to welcoming the Indian leader back to Washington. The 2026 G20 Summit is scheduled to take place in Miami, Florida, on December 14 and 15, marking the first time the United States has hosted the prestigious gathering since 2009.
Interim Bilateral Trade Agreement Negotiations
Addressing the progress of the proposed interim India-US trade agreement, Ambassador Gor expressed strong optimism that discussions would conclude successfully. He noted that negotiations are moving forward under the direction of Ambassador Greer, who holds President Donald Trump's full confidence.
While acknowledging that the pact encompasses thousands of distinct items and necessitates rigorous legal vetting, Gor maintained an upbeat assessment of the timeline. 'These are complex legal matters, and this is not a one-page document. We have thousands of items between our two nations that we are working on. The fact that we have come this far is a great sign for the relationship, and I am hopeful that we will be able to wrap this up sooner rather than later,' Gor said during his remarks.

Ambassador Gor shared that he recently briefed President Trump following his diplomatic travels to India, characterizing their discussion as an exchange between long-standing colleagues. During his prior diplomatic outreach in May, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio formally extended an invitation on behalf of the administration for Prime Minister Modi to make an official visit to the White House. That invitation was delivered during Secretary Rubio's official four-day visit to India, which spanned from May 23 to May 26, setting the stage for subsequent high-level diplomatic exchanges.

Beyond bilateral trade and upcoming summits, Ambassador Gor stressed the pressing strategic necessity to institutionalise regular ministerial-level meetings within the Quad framework.
