US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor arrived in Imphal on Friday for a two-day official visit, holding high-level discussions with Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla and Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh. The diplomatic engagement focused on bilateral cooperation, regional economic expansion, and ongoing US-India relations. Gor's itinerary in the northeastern state also featured cultural site explorations, including the ancient Kangla Fort and the all-women-run Khwairamband Ema Keithel market.
During the meetings held at the Chief Minister's Secretariat, the discussions centered on collaborative economic avenues and state development initiatives. Chief Minister Singh was accompanied by senior state officials during the talks, while Ambassador Gor traveled alongside Kathy Giles-Diaz, the US Consul General in Kolkata. State government sources confirmed that the ambassador would spend the night in the state capital before concluding his two-day diplomatic tour.

Ambassador Gor met with Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla to discuss the strategic importance of sustained bilateral engagement between the United States and India. Following the interaction, Gor shared his perspective via official communications, emphasizing the value of diplomatic ties. The conversation then shifted toward regional development when Gor met with Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh at the Secretariat in Mantripukhri.
During their substantive discussions, Chief Minister Singh outlined his administration's developmental vision for the state. According to an official government release, the US envoy expressed appreciation for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's administrative focus on accelerating growth across Northeast India. The dialogue also covered potential pathways for expanding commercial ties and increasing tourism numbers within the region.
Cultural Heritage and Historic Visits
Away from formal administrative meetings, Ambassador Gor immersed himself in the local heritage of Manipur by touring landmark historical sites. He walked through the grounds of Kangla Fort, which historically served as the ancient political and cultural heart of the erstwhile Manipur kingdom. The site holds deep historical significance for the region's governance and traditional identity.
In addition to the ancient fort, the US envoy visited Khwairamband Ema Keithel, the iconic all-women-run market located in the heart of Imphal. The historic trading hub is widely recognized for its unique socio-economic structure entirely managed by women vendors. Local officials noted that the visit provided the diplomatic delegation with firsthand exposure to the traditional commercial vibrancy of the state.
Festival Invitation and Economic Partnership
Expanding on the discussions regarding bilateral cooperation, Chief Minister Singh formally invited Ambassador Gor to return to the state later in the year. The invitation specifically designated the upcoming Manipur Sangai Festival, scheduled for late November, as an opportunity to experience local culture firsthand. Singh noted during the interactions that the state encompasses 36 distinct communities, adding cultural depth to the festival's regional prominence.
In public statements released after the meetings, Gor highlighted the constructive nature of the economic discussions. "Enjoyed hearing from Chief Minister Khemchand Yumnam about his vision for Manipur. We exchanged ideas about how the US and India can work together to expand economic ties. The chief minister very kindly invited me back for the Manipur Sangai Festival," Gor stated on social media.
Regional Tour Preceded by Darjeeling Leg
The Manipur visit formed the second leg of the ambassador's broader regional itinerary following a stop in West Bengal. Gor spent the preceding Thursday in Darjeeling upon receiving a personal invitation from Rajya Sabha MP, former Foreign Secretary, and former Indian Ambassador to the US, Harsh Vardhan Shringla.
Reflecting on the Darjeeling portion of his trip, Gor praised the local landscapes, historical significance, and community hospitality. His itinerary in the hill district included a tour of the historic Makaibari Tea Estate, where he sampled regional tea varieties before traveling onward to the Northeast for his meetings with Manipur leadership.
