Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for Pune Metro infrastructure works valued at approximately Rs 21,800 crore via video conferencing on Tuesday. During the event, Modi stated that India's operational rapid transit network has expanded from 248 km before 2014 to 1,200 km across the nation.

The proceedings included the formal inauguration of Pune Metro Line 3, an elevated 23-km route popularly known as the Pink Line. Constructed at an outlay exceeding Rs 8,300 crore, the corridor establishes a direct transit link between the Hinjewadi information technology cluster and Shivajinagar.

Corridor Alignment and Commuter Transit Capacity

Spanning roughly 23 kilometres, the newly opened Pink Line route connects Maan terminal with the District Court Metro station. State planners designed the corridor to integrate directly with Pune's pre-existing metro grid, facilitating cross-city transit transfers between older municipal quarters and newer suburban developments.

The transit link is expected to significantly shorten daily commuting durations for thousands of technology professionals traveling to Hinjewadi.

The infrastructure works represent a major step toward modernising Pune's urban mobility through technological innovation and contemporary transportation solutions. Commercial and residential zones along the alignment will benefit from direct access to mass transit facilities.

Phase-II Metro Corridors and Expansion Scope

Alongside the operational line opening, Modi laid the foundation stone for Phase-II of the Pune Metro development project. Phase-II entails an estimated capital investment of around Rs 13,500 crore to construct four supplementary metro alignments.

In Maharashtra, operational metro lines have increased to nearly 175 km, with construction underway on more than 680 km involving investment exceeding Rs 2.5 lakh crore, according to DD India.

The Pune Metro Rail Project was sanctioned by the Government of India in 2016 and the Foundation Stone was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 26th December 2016, according to Press Information Bureau.

The upcoming expansion phase encompasses Pune Metro Lines 2A, 2B, 4, and 4A to widen coverage across residential communities, industrial nodes, and commercial centres. Under Phase-II, Lines 2A and 2B will span 12.75 kilometres, Line 4 will cover 25.52 kilometres, and Line 4A will extend across 6.12 kilometres. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis participated in the virtual ceremony, joining state and municipal leaders for the infrastructure rollout.

Long-Term Urban Growth and Industrial Vision

Reflecting on the municipal transit trajectory, Modi noted that he had participated in laying the foundation stone for Pune's initial metro phase a decade ago. He recalled that when the NDA assumed governance in 2014, it established a clear commitment to ensure ease of living and transportation for citizens.

Modi extended his congratulations to the citizens of Pune and Maharashtra on the operational commissioning of the route. He described Pune as a key centre shaping the developmental energy of a developed India, pointing to the city's diverse strengths across automotive manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, software engineering, and startup innovation.

Modi remarked that modernising urban transport infrastructure is important to matching the economic aspirations of youthful industrial talent. He added that the progressive reinforcement of municipal metro networks will inject fresh momentum into the sustained economic expansion of Pune and Maharashtra.
