Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Vadodara on Monday to inaugurate and lay the foundation stones for a suite of development projects valued at over ₹35,000 crore. The visit marks a significant expansion of India's logistics and transportation infrastructure, headlined by the full operationalization of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC). Following the events in Gujarat, the Prime Minister is scheduled to travel to Mumbai to inaugurate the seventh edition of the Global Fintech Fest (GFF) 2026, a major international gathering of financial policymakers and technology leaders.
The Vadodara programme serves as a cornerstone for regional connectivity, with the Prime Minister dedicating three critical sections of the WDFC—Sanand (North)-Makarpura, New Umbergaon-New Saphale, and New Saphale-JNPT—covering 326 route kilometers. Developed at a cost exceeding ₹20,700 crore, these segments provide direct freight connectivity to the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA). Officials state that this integration is designed to accelerate the movement of export-import cargo, reduce logistics costs, and alleviate congestion on Mumbai’s conventional railway network. With these sections now commissioned, the entire WDFC network is fully operational from Dadri in Uttar Pradesh to the western coast.
Expansion of Rail and Freight Infrastructure
Beyond the WDFC, the Prime Minister’s itinerary includes the flagging off of freight train services from New Sanand (North), New Makarpura, New Umbergaon, and New JNPT. To bolster passenger connectivity, Modi will also inaugurate a new train service between Vadodara and Tanda Road, which is expected to serve residents in the Vadodara, Chhota Udepur, and Alirajpur districts. This initiative includes the dedication of the Jobat-Tanda Road rail line, a project developed under the broader Chhota Udepur-Dhar rail scheme, aimed at integrating remote tribal regions into the national rail network.
Further investment in rail capacity was announced through the laying of foundation stones for three major projects spanning 329 kilometers, with a total outlay exceeding ₹9,700 crore. These projects include the construction of third and fourth lines between Vadodara and Ratlam, the gauge conversion of the Miyagam Karjan-Choranda-Malsar section, and the doubling of the Vishwamitri-Dabhoi line. These upgrades are intended to enhance both passenger and freight throughput while strengthening the vital rail corridor between Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh.
Road Connectivity and State-Level Development
Infrastructure development extends to the road sector, with the Prime Minister laying the foundation stones for three National Highway projects valued at approximately ₹1,780 crore. Key components of this plan include the six-laning of the Kamrej-Chalthan section of NH-48 and the construction of major bridges over the Tapi and Narmada rivers on the Vadodara-Surat stretch. Additionally, grade-separated structures are planned for the Abhava, Mindhola, and Khajod junctions on NH-53 to improve traffic flow and safety.
To address road safety, the government is inaugurating two six-lane flyovers at Kandari Chokdi and Luvara Patia, specifically targeting identified black spots on NH-48. Complementing these federal initiatives, the state government is launching projects worth ₹2,600 crore. These include the second phase of the Vadodara Urban Development Authority Ring Road, a 110 MW floating solar project at Kadana Dam, and a new administrative building for the Vadodara Municipal Corporation. Housing projects under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana and water supply schemes for 11 villages in eastern Vadodara are also set to be inaugurated.
Digital Registration and Public Engagement
The Vadodara event saw a notable shift in public administration, as the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) utilized the private digital platform BookMyShow to manage registrations for the Prime Minister’s public address. The response was immediate, with all available seats filled within an hour of the portal opening. Due to the high demand, the VMC was forced to close registrations, leaving more than 42,000 applicants on a waiting list, highlighting the significant public interest in the Prime Minister's visit.
Global Fintech Fest 2026 in Mumbai
Following the Gujarat leg of his tour, the Prime Minister will travel to Mumbai to inaugurate the Global Fintech Fest (GFF) 2026 at the Jio World Centre. The four-day conference, running from September 8 to 11, has established itself as a premier platform for global financial leaders, regulators, and technology innovators. The theme for this year’s edition, "Potential to Impact: Agentic AI, Tokenisation, Quantum – Trusted, Connected, Global Systems for Inclusive Finance," reflects the industry's focus on emerging technologies.
The event aims to build upon India’s success in digital payments and financial inclusion, providing a forum for stakeholders to discuss how programmable finance and quantum computing can create measurable outcomes for global economies. G Padmanabhan, a member of the GFF 2026 advisory council and former executive director of the Reserve Bank of India, noted the growing international interest in the event, stating, "The expectation as far as investors is 500," compared to the 350 who attended the previous edition. The conference is designed to serve as a convergence point for policy, regulation, and capital.
