Omar Abdullah Urges Action After Attack on Srinagar Sleeper Bus

Violent Attack on Interstate Passenger Bus
A luxury sleeper bus bound for Srinagar was left with broken windows and shattered taillights after an attack in Haryana. The violent incident took place late Friday night near Kurukshetra along the national highway corridor. The interstate transport vehicle was operated by private travel company Star World Ventures and carried a Jammu and Kashmir registration number. The driver explained that the coach had stopped for dinner at Hotel Divine Star in Nilokheri, Haryana, past Karnal. Eyewitness accounts confirmed that a group of unidentified people first abused the driver before launching a physical assault. The assailants pelted the bus with stones and bricks, smashing its side windows and body panels.
Passenger Trauma and Physical Injuries
The driver stated that there were 35 passengers on board the 40-seater sleeper coach during the scheduled transit. Eyewitnesses reported that many passengers, including women and children, were asleep when the sudden stone attack commenced. Visual documentation and video footage shared across social networks captured broken glass strewn across berths and an elderly Kashmiri passenger bleeding. Passengers reported immense panic inside the cabin as heavy stones penetrated the vehicle glass while occupants scrambled for protection. The transit coach subsequently continued its journey under security supervision, successfully reaching Jammu en route to Srinagar.
Political Condemnation Across Jammu and Kashmir
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah took up the incident directly with Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini and senior police leadership. Omar Abdullah publicly declared that this unfortunate incident should never have taken place and urged strict legal action against the perpetrators. Abdullah confirmed that the Jammu and Kashmir administration stands in solidarity with the affected travelers and continues monitoring developments. Political organizations across the union territory united in condemning the targeted highway violence against civilian travelers. J&K BJP spokesman Altaf Thakur asserted that targeting people because of their Kashmiri identity is completely unacceptable under democratic governance.
Haryana Police Action and Investigation Findings
Responding swiftly to concerns raised by his Jammu and Kashmir counterpart, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini affirmed that public safety is his government's top priority. Saini emphasized that the safety of every citizen and visitor in Haryana remains an utmost administrative priority. State law enforcement registered a formal First Information Report and arrested both accused individuals connected to the highway assault. Authorities confirmed that further formal legal proceedings are underway to prosecute the detained suspects.
Haryana Police said the initial inquiry pointed to a parking dispute and reported arrests of two suspected participants. Passengers separately alleged that they were targeted over their Kashmiri identity; the motive remains disputed and should not be reported as a proven hate crime.
Why the jurisdiction matters
The reported attack involved passengers on a sleeper bus associated with travel to Srinagar. Accounts of where the incident occurred, which police force registered the complaint and whether it was a targeted assault must be distinguished. A statement by Omar Abdullah calling for action expresses political concern; it is not evidence identifying the attackers or determining their motivation. Reports involving passengers' religion or region require care to avoid attributing one group's alleged actions to a wider community.
The priority is a verified FIR, injury assessments and statements from the competent police authority. If the incident occurred outside Jammu and Kashmir, requests for action may properly be directed to that state's administration. Bus operators and passengers need clear information about reporting assaults, preserving CCTV and identifying witnesses, while avoiding circulation of identifiable victim images without justification. Any arrests or charges should be described by their actual legal status rather than assumed to be proof of guilt.
