BJP MLA Alleges Corruption Following Congress Letter on KRIDL Fees
Mangaluru City North BJP MLA Y. Bharat Shetty alleged on September 1, 2026, that a letter from Congress MLA Ashok Kumar Rai to Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar exposed high levels of corruption in the Karnataka government. The letter, dated August 25, alleged that two engineers from the Karnataka Rural Infrastructure Development Limited office in Mangaluru, an Executive Engineer and a Junior Engineer, demanded 7 percent more money as a KRIDL charge from contractors, according to BJP MLA Y. Bharat Shetty.
The letter also claimed that engineers were collecting money, stating they had to make monthly payments to the district in-charge minister and the minister in-charge of KRIDL, per the same allegations. Mangaluru City North MLA Y. Bharat Shetty stated, "A Congress MLA writing to Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar on corruption in Karnataka Rural Infrastructure Development Limited office in Dakshina Kannada has exposed the high level of corruption in the State government led by the Congress."
Leader of Opposition in the Assembly R. Ashoka stated, "The allegations have been raised by a Congress MLA himself exposing corruption within its own government." R. Ashoka demanded the immediate suspension of KRIDL officials allegedly involved in the commission racket and sought criminal cases against those responsible, according to assembly opposition statements. BJP MLA and General Secretary V. Sunil Kumar alleged that a new 7 percent ministers charge has been added as an additional expense in Congress government schemes, per party press briefings.
Upa Lokayukta Corruption Figures and Political Fallout
During the political exchange, BJP MLA Y. Bharat Shetty quoted Upa Lokayukta Justice B. Veerappa, who had previously stated that 63 percent of people in Karnataka had to pay bribes to get government work done, according to public remarks. Upa Lokayukta Justice B. Veerappa later clarified in December 2025 that the 63 percent figure was from the India Corruption Survey 2019 and was being quoted out of context, referring to a period when the BJP government was in power, per judicial clarifications. Upa Lokayukta Justice B. Veerappa clarified, "In the India Corruption Survey 2019, citizens admitted to paying bribes: Karnataka 63 percent... He said his remarks were publicised without providing a context and was being misused by politicians."
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah accused the BJP of twisting facts, stating that Upa Lokayukta Justice B. Veerappa's 63 percent corruption figure referred to a 2019 report when the BJP government under B.S. Yediyurappa was in power, according to government statements. The Karnataka State Contractor Association had previously written a letter to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in September 2025, alleging that corruption under the Congress-led government had doubled compared to the previous BJP government, per contractor association records.
Protests and Historical Commission Row Context
The Congress party had previously campaigned against the BJP government, alleging a 40 percent commission regime, which the BJP now claims the Congress could not substantiate, according to political archives. Upa Lokayukta Justice B. Veerappa contrasted Karnataka's 63 percent corruption figure with Kerala's reported 10 percent corruption, per official survey discussions.
To protest against alleged corruption under the Congress Government, the BJP launched a 10-day Padayatra from Raichur to Ballari on September 1, 2026, according to BJP leaders. The full content of Congress MLA Ashok Kumar Rai's letter, specific evidence supporting the 7 percent ministers charge beyond allegations, and the current status of any official investigation into the KRIDL allegations have not been publicly disclosed in official investigative findings.
Citizens of Karnataka face potential degradation of public services and increased costs due to alleged corruption in infrastructure projects and government offices, according to civic analyst evaluations. The Karnataka Congress government faces significant political pressure and scrutiny over governance and anti-corruption promises, potentially impacting its public image and electoral prospects, per political risk assessments.
