India Clears Rs 1.10 Lakh Crore Defence Acquisition Proposals for Armed Forces

The Indian Defence Ministry on Monday granted in-principle administrative clearance for capital acquisition proposals valued at approximately Rs 1.10 lakh crore to bolster the combat capabilities of the Army, Navy, and Air Force. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh chaired the Defence Acquisition Council meeting in New Delhi, where the Acceptance of Necessity was formally approved for a wide range of military hardware and modernization systems.

Official announcements from the ministry indicated that roughly 98 percent of the total procurement outlay will be sourced directly from the domestic Indian industry. This emphasis on indigenous manufacturing aligns with national defense procurement frameworks aimed at reducing foreign vendor dependency and strengthening domestic defense industrial capacities across all three military services.

For the Indian Army, the Defence Acquisition Council cleared specialized acquisitions including Chemical Biological Radiological and Nuclear reconnaissance vehicles, High Mobility Vehicles, and Self-Propelled Mechanical Mine Layers. The CBRN reconnaissance vehicles are designated to detect, identify, monitor, and mark areas contaminated by hazardous agents during operational contingencies. Meanwhile, the High Mobility Vehicles are intended to support logistical lines and enhance troop and equipment mobility across challenging frontier terrains.

The Army's clearance list also incorporates Advanced Light Helicopters, Trawl Tanks, and the Sarvatra Bridge System to support fighting formations during operational deployments. The mechanical mine layers are designed to deliver faster and more responsive mine-laying capabilities in difficult geographical areas. Additionally, the composite bridge systems and trawl tanks will provide essential engineering support for riverine and obstacle-crossing operations.

Naval acquisitions approved during the high-level meeting center on critical surveillance and warship propulsion upgrades designed to enhance maritime domain awareness. The council granted Acceptance of Necessity for the procurement of Arudhra Radars, which are scheduled to replace existing Air Route Surveillance Radars at multiple Naval Air Stations across the country. These advanced radar installations will provide improved air picture compilation and surveillance coverage for naval operations.

According to official statements, introducing domestically developed marine gas turbines will directly reduce the Navy's dependency on foreign suppliers for critical propulsion hardware. Air Force modernization initiatives approved by the council encompass electronic warfare capabilities, transport enhancements, and secure administrative infrastructure. The council cleared procurement proposals to upgrade the war-fighting effectiveness of fighter jets, transport aircraft, and rotary-wing assets currently operated by the service. These upgrades are intended to ensure tactical superiority and electronic resilience in contested airspace environments.

Approval was also granted for acquiring Ground-Based Multi-Purpose Jammers designed to deliver effective electronic countermeasures against adversary radar networks. In addition, the armed forces will replace legacy paper-based identity cards, passes, and permits with interoperable Radio Frequency Identification-based smart cards under the newly sanctioned Defence Forces Secure Access Card system.

The decision to channel 98 percent of the Rs 1.10 lakh crore procurement budget into domestic manufacturing represents a major milestone for India's defense indigenization strategy. By prioritizing local suppliers, the ministry aims to foster technological innovation and long-term sustainability within the domestic defense manufacturing ecosystem. The diverse array of cleared equipment spans CBRN protection, electronic warfare, radar surveillance, and tactical bridging, addressing multiple operational gaps simultaneously.

While the Acceptance of Necessity grants the initial administrative green light, subsequent stages will involve contract negotiations, prototype testing, and production scheduling by domestic defense contractors. The comprehensive nature of the procurement package underlines the government's ongoing commitment to comprehensive military modernization alongside indigenous capability building across the Army, Navy, and Air Force.
