The Indian Institute of Technology Ropar (IIT Ropar) and the Centre for Research in Rural and Industrial Development (CRRID), Chandigarh, signed a Memorandum of Understanding on September 1, 2026, establishing a formalized framework for collaborative research in public policy, artificial intelligence, and rural development.
The agreement brings together academic engineering capabilities and social science research infrastructure to design data-driven solutions for governance. According to an official statement, the partnership combines CRRID's long standing expertise in social science research, development policy, and government-facing assignments with IIT Ropar's strengths in engineering, artificial intelligence, data science, and emerging technologies.
The Memorandum of Understanding was signed by Prof. Rajeev Ahuja, Director of IIT Ropar, and Ms. Vini Mahajan, Chairperson of the Governing Body of CRRID. The signing ceremony took place in the presence of Shri Aaditya Dachalwal, an Indian Administrative Service officer and Deputy Commissioner of Rupnagar.
Focus Areas in Data-Driven Governance
A primary focus of the collaboration will be the practical application of artificial intelligence and data-driven methodologies to enhance public policy formulation and state-level administration. The participating institutions plan to design and deploy artificial intelligence-enabled solutions to support evidence-based policy making, improve the implementation and monitoring of public programs, and strengthen formal impact assessments of government welfare schemes.
The operational scope covers multiple sectors including rural and industrial development, agriculture, public health, environmental sustainability, urban governance, public finance, and Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises. The agreement facilitates joint and sponsored research projects, the co-development of technology-enabled policy tools, preparation of joint funding proposals, and academic publications.
