Gurugram Woman Biker Road Rage Attack Sparks Safety Fears and Police FIR

Gurugram Police have registered a first information report following a viral social media video capturing a car driver chasing and deliberately ramming a woman motorcyclist on Golf Course Road. The incident, which took place on Sunday, has ignited widespread concern among women riders across the National Capital Region regarding road safety, aggressive driving, and persistent intimidation while commuting.

The victim, identified on social media as Shivani Chauhan or Siya, was riding an Aprilia RS 457 with a group of fellow motorcyclists when the vehicle bearing registration number HR 30 Y 4949 allegedly began following them. According to statements and video footage, the car's occupants behaved inappropriately before the vehicle overtook and struck the motorcycle from behind, throwing the rider onto the asphalt and dragging the machine for several metres before fleeing.

Gurugram Police intervened after the Social Media Monitoring Cell intercepted the footage on September 14. An official FIR has been registered at the Sector 56 police station against the driver of the four-wheeler under provisions dealing with rash and negligent driving.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Abhilaksh Joshi stated that law enforcement authorities contacted the victim and initiated legal proceedings based on the digital evidence, even though no formal written complaint had been submitted by the rider at the initial stage. Police confirmed that investigators are actively tracing the identity of the driver through vehicle registration records while keeping the victim as part of the ongoing inquiry.

The registered owner of the car, Manish, told investigators and media representatives that he was not behind the wheel when the collision occurred. According to the owner, who stated he works in the Army, he had lent the vehicle to an acquaintance named Kalyan Singh from Palwal district two days prior to the incident.

Manish stated that he learned of the collision through reports and subsequently attempted to reach out to the borrower without success. He also sent representatives to the borrower's residence to ascertain the vehicle's whereabouts as police intensified their efforts to locate the driver.

The incident has renewed discussions surrounding the daily safety challenges faced by women who navigate arterial roadways in Delhi and Gurugram. Riders pointed out that aggressive driving, erratic lane changes, and intoxicated motorists create hazardous conditions that disproportionately affect women travelling alone during early morning or late evening hours.

Veteran and active motorcyclists noted that safety precautions such as wearing full riding gear, helmets, and face coverings are often employed not merely for physical protection against crashes, but as a deliberate measure to avoid unwanted harassment and visual scrutiny on public thoroughfares.

Experts and advocates working on urban transport highlighted that recurring intimidation and unsafe road conditions carry direct socio-economic consequences. Sarika Panda Bhatt, director at Nagarro and founder of the Trusee-Raahgiri Foundation, pointed out that women two-wheeler riders remain significantly under-represented because prevailing aggressive traffic environments deter them from transit.

Every unsafe encounter or near miss translates directly into lost working hours, restricted mobility, and reduced earnings for women who rely on two-wheelers for daily commuting and livelihood support, underlining that safe roadway access remains closely tied to financial independence.

Authorities have issued warnings against the circulation of unverified information and rumors regarding the ongoing investigation, emphasizing that spreading baseless claims constitutes a legal offense.

Police confirmed that proactive monitoring of rash driving across Gurugram will continue under the supervision of the Social Media Monitoring Cell, with further legal actions contingent upon the apprehension of the primary suspect and the conclusion of the formal police investigation.
