Delhi Court Remands Cockroach Party Leaders to Five Days in Judicial Custody

Two prominent figures of the youth-led Cockroach Janta Party were sent to five days of judicial custody on Wednesday following their detention after a demonstration at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi. Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka were brought before a magistrate after scaling security barriers and entering the historical observatory site a day earlier. The police action followed the recent administrative decision to remove Jantar Mantar from the capital list of authorized demonstration grounds.
A third individual, Ajinkya Shinde, was released after executing a personal surety bond of 5,000 rupees and providing an undertaking to preserve public order for six months.
Magistrate Proceedings and Criminal Charges
The formal police filings lodged at the Connaught Place and Parliament Street stations invoked multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Following these filings, the three organizers were produced before a Special Executive Magistrate under procedural sections of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita that empower authorities to demand security undertakings and execute preventive arrests to thwart cognizable offenses.
Youth-led protests escalated over allegations concerning the deletion of 130 million voter names under the Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision.
Legal representatives for the movement contended that detained members experienced restrictions regarding timely access to counsel during their overnight detention. The magistrates ultimately ordered the five-day judicial remand for Das and Ranka after reviewing police records highlighting apprehension of recurring violations.
Political Repercussions and Assembly Restrictions
The detentions occurred amid wider nationwide demonstrations organized by political opposition blocks and youth collectives demanding electoral reforms and the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Movement founder Abhijit Dipke criticized the government response, accusing federal authorities of suppressing lawful expression. Opposition leaders, including Lok Sabha opposition leader Rahul Gandhi, condemned the detention of individuals waving the national flag during peaceful assemblies.
Delhi police maintained heavy security cordons across central areas, closing multiple transit hubs and deploying thousands of personnel following the weekend actions. The de-notification of Jantar Mantar has redirected upcoming demonstrations toward alternative outer venues such as Ramlila Maidan, Burari Ground, and CBD Ground, prompting sustained opposition from civil society groups arguing that remote locations diminish public visibility.
