BJP Fields Slain Aide's Mother for High-Stakes Nandigram Bypoll

The Bharatiya Janata Party on Tuesday named Hasirani Rath, the mother of slain political aide Chandranath Rath, as its candidate for the upcoming Nandigram Assembly byelection. The electoral contest in the Purba Medinipur constituency carries heavy political symbolism following a violent sequence of events earlier this year.

The high-stakes bypoll was necessitated after West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari relinquished the Nandigram seat, choosing instead to retain Bhabanipur after winning both constituencies during the 2006 Assembly elections. The nomination of Ms. Rath introduces a sharp emotional dimension to the electoral battleground.

Hasirani Rath brings established grassroots experience to the contest rather than stepping into politics as a complete novice. The BJP nominee has been active in public life since 1998, having served two terms as a panchayat member and three terms as a panchayat samiti member.

Speaking to reporters after offering prayers at the Siddheshwar Shiv Temple and Jankinath Temple in Nandigram, Ms. Rath expressed confidence in her political standing. She stated that she would discharge any responsibility entrusted to her by the party with sincerity, noting her long association with local governance.

The political gravity of the Nandigram contest is deeply tied to the killing of Chandranath Rath, who served as personal assistant to the Chief Minister. On May 6, 2006, motorcycle-borne assailants intercepted and fired at his vehicle in Madhyamgram within the North 24 Parganas district, resulting in his death shortly before the administration took oath.

The Central Bureau of Investigation took over the inquiry from the state police and its Special Investigation Team, subsequently filing a formal chargesheet before the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate's court in Barasat on August 7, naming 12 accused individuals. Following the tragedy, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari visited the grieving family and assured them of ongoing personal and political support.

The Nandigram byelection on October 6 is shaping up as a crowded multi-cornered electoral battle featuring multiple rival factions and political formations. The All India Trinamool Congress has nominated Sanchita Pradhan Dey for the Nandigram seat, while the Congress party has put forward Milan Pradhan.

The Left front has named Shantigopal Giri of the CPI as its candidate. Additionally, a rival Trinamool Congress faction led by Ritabrata Banerjee has fielded Mohammad Eteshamul Haque, setting the stage for a divided opposition vote.

Accompanied by a large procession of party supporters, Hasirani Rath is scheduled to file her formal nomination papers in Haldia, with Chief Minister Adhikari expected to be present to support the filing. September 16 marks the final deadline for candidate submissions.

Polling across the Nandigram and Rejinagar constituencies is scheduled for October 6, with official vote counting and results slated for October 9. Meanwhile, the Election Commission is expected to rule on disputes concerning party symbols for rival Trinamool factions.
