Assam Rifles Jawan Killed in Militant Ambush Along India-Myanmar Border
An Assam Rifles jawan was killed and four others were injured on Tuesday morning following a suspected militant ambush along the India-Myanmar border in Arunachal Pradesh. The attack occurred at approximately 6:30 am near Nampong Nallah in the Changlang district, where a patrol team from the 21 Assam Rifles was conducting security checks near an active border fencing construction site.
According to The Hindu, the Ministry of Home Affairs declared Tirap, Changlang, and Longding districts in Arunachal Pradesh as disturbed areas under the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, extending AFSPA for six months effective October 1, 2026.

The deceased has been identified as 42-year-old Havildar Jangkhokai Kuki. Security forces have since launched intensified operations across the region to track the perpetrators.
Security Situation in Changlang District
The Changlang district remains a highly sensitive zone due to the persistent movement of insurgent groups operating both within the region and across the international boundary. While official confirmation regarding the identity of the attackers is pending, preliminary reports from security officials have suggested the potential involvement of militants belonging to the NSCN (K-YA) faction.

The Assam Rifles leadership has formally acknowledged the loss, with Director General Lieutenant General Vikas Lakhera and all ranks of the force paying tribute to Havildar Kuki. In a public statement, the force expressed its commitment to supporting the bereaved family of the soldier who made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty.
This incident follows a similar attack in July 2026, when an Assam Rifles jawan was killed and four others were injured in a suspected IED blast in the Chumoukedima district of neighbouring Nagaland. Security establishments had previously linked that attack to the eastern flank of the NSCN (Isak-Muivah), though that group later issued a statement condemning the act. Authorities are currently continuing their search operations in the Changlang sector as the investigation into Tuesday's ambush proceeds.
