ABVP Secures Three DUSU Posts as Independent Candidate Wins Vice-President Seat

The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) secured three of the four central panel positions in the 2026 Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) elections, while an independent candidate claimed the vice-presidential seat. The results, announced on September 19, 2026, followed a polling process that recorded a voter turnout of 40.46 per cent, an increase from the 39.5 per cent turnout observed in the previous year.

ABVP candidates emerged victorious in the races for president, secretary, and joint secretary. Despite retaining these three posts, the organization saw a reduction in its overall winning margin, which fell to 9,671 votes from 23,873 in the 2025 cycle. The vice-presidential contest was won by independent candidate Deepanshu Shokeen, who was previously associated with the National Students' Union of India (NSUI). The election process was marked by a competitive atmosphere, with NSUI trailing in two of the central panel races.

The counting of votes took place at the North Campus Sports Stadium under heightened security measures. More than 2,000 police and paramilitary personnel were deployed across the university to manage the process, with the Delhi Traffic Police issuing advisories to mitigate congestion on surrounding roads. The Delhi High Court had previously issued a directive barring victory processions following the declaration of results, a measure intended to maintain order across the campus.

The DUSU elections involve 52 of the university's 91 colleges and faculties. Prominent institutions, including St Stephen's College, Lady Shri Ram College, and Jesus and Mary College, do not participate in the DUSU electoral process. The union has historically served as a platform for student leaders who later entered mainstream national politics, with former presidents including figures such as Arun Jaitley, Vijay Goel, Ajay Maken, and Alka Lamba. Ahead of the university-level results, ABVP had secured multiple positions in college-level student union elections, including all four key posts at institutions such as Aditi Mahavidyalaya and Shivaji College, while the Students' Federation of India (SFI) secured wins at Zakir Husain and Bhaskaracharya colleges.
