AAP And Goa Forward Party Launch Goa First Alliance For 2027 Polls

The Aam Aadmi Party and the regional Goa Forward Party have formally announced a pre-poll partnership named Goa First for the upcoming 2027 legislative assembly elections in the coastal state. The newly established coalition positions itself as a distinct third alternative for voters seeking representation outside of both the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and the opposition Congress.

Making the announcement at a joint press conference in Panaji, AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal and Goa Forward Party president Vijai Sardesai argued that voters in the state deserve a credible political vehicle untainted by past defections. The political front enters the electoral landscape with modest legislative backing, holding a combined three seats in the current 40-member Goa legislative assembly.

Addressing reporters in the state capital, Kejriwal asserted that the ruling BJP would fail to secure a majority in the forthcoming legislative elections and predicted that the Goa First alliance would form the next government. The coalition partners framed their electoral strategy around capturing voter disillusionment with both major national parties, emphasizing that the electorate has been repeatedly let down by cross-floor alignments.

Goa Forward Party chief Vijai Sardesai defended the necessity of the tie-up by pointing to historical political instability in the state, where previous mandates were eroded by wholesale party switching. Sardesai stated that the coalition was designed to prioritize the interests of Goa above national party imperatives while keeping channels open for other like-minded political forces to join the platform ahead of the February 2027 contest.

The formation of the coalition follows stalled discussions between regional groups and the Congress party regarding a broader opposition front. During the 2022 assembly elections, the political footprint of the allied parties included an AAP vote share of 6.77 percent yielding two seats, while the Goa Forward Party secured 1.78 percent of the vote with Sardesai winning his traditional stronghold of Fatorda.

In the current 40-seat assembly, AAP is represented by MLAs Venzy Viegas from Benaulim and Cruz Silva from Velim, both located in South Goa. Sardesai operates as the lone legislator for his party, having previously maintained an alliance with the Congress during the 2022 election cycle before legislative numbers shifted through subsequent political realignments.

During the joint media briefing, Kejriwal faced pointed questions regarding party discipline following the recent departure of seven AAP Rajya Sabha members who aligned with the ruling national administration. Kejriwal acknowledged the defections as a significant failure of internal vetting, describing the episode as a severe breach of trust directed at the party organization rather than the ordinary electorate.

"It is a matter of great regret that our Rajya Sabha MPs left the party. They betrayed the party. The party sent them to the Rajya Sabha; the people did not send them," Kejriwal told reporters, adding that the organization would institute much stricter candidate scrutiny for future parliamentary nominations.

Contrasting the upper house defections with ground-level representation, Kejriwal defended the steadfastness of the party's state-level elected officials across various regions. He highlighted that despite continuous political pressure, AAP legislators in Goa, Jammu and Kashmir, and Gujarat had resisted switching sides, pointing to a successful by-election victory in Gujarat where the party reclaimed a seat following a resignation.

Sardesai reinforced these assurances by arguing that his own political decisions reflected adherence to regional commitments rather than shifting opportunistic alliances. Both leaders maintained that the Goa First platform would draw support equally from disillusioned voters of both major national formations without splitting the broader anti-BJP mandate.

With the pre-poll arrangement officially declared months ahead of the constitutional expiry of the 40-member assembly, both organizations are scheduled to begin joint organizational groundwork across North and South Goa constituencies. The leadership intends to finalize candidate selection parameters while keeping the coalition framework accessible to regional figures seeking an alternative political platform.

As election machinery gears up for the 2027 battleground, the immediate focus shifts to grassroots outreach meetings across coastal and hinterland constituencies to solidify the non-BJP and non-Congress narrative among local electorate segments.
