Yale Study Quantifies U.S. Mortality Reductions from Air Conditioning
A new study published in *Nature Health* by researchers at the Yale School of Public Health and the Yale School of the Environment indicates that household air conditioning prevents approximately 5,267 heat-related deaths annually across the contiguous United States. The figure represents a 57% reduction in heat-attributable mortality. Between 2010 and 2020, air conditioning saved nearly 58,000 lives nationwide.
However, the research highlights a significant environmental trade-off. Electricity demand for cooling is projected to triple worldwide. The United Nations projects that heat-trapping gas emissions from air conditioning use will increase from 4.5 billion to 7.2 billion tons over the next 25 years, a volume nearly equivalent to the combined current carbon pollution of the United States and Europe.
Kai Chen, an epidemiology professor at the Yale School of Public Health and senior author of the study, stated, "Everyone knows air conditioning works, but air conditioning from a climate change perspective is not an ideal. It leads to more carbon emissions, then it accelerates the climate warming problem."
Environmental Costs and Overuse Concerns
The study notes that moderate air conditioning use provides substantial health benefits, but overuse beyond median levels does not save additional lives and instead worsens climate change. More than half of the cases examined by researchers fell into the category of overuse. Additionally, urban air conditioning contributes to the urban heat island effect while increasing traditional soot and smog air pollution.
Narasimha Rao, a study co-author and professor of energy systems at the Yale School of the Environment, highlighted the socio-economic disparities in cooling access, stating, "While some choose to turn on their ACs, others make the uncomfortable choice of bearing the heat to save money for food."
Robert Dubrow, a study co-author and founding faculty director of the Yale Center on Climate Change and Health, argued that landlords in the United States should be required to provide cooling in the summer, similar to heating mandates in winter, to address public health necessity.
Global Cooling Expansion and Regulatory Responses
Air conditioning use has more than doubled in Europe since 1990, registering a 44% jump, and has tripled in India alongside more than doubling in Southeast Asia, according to International Energy Agency data. A separate 2026 study in *Nature Communications* estimated that by 2050, air conditioning use will more than double, potentially producing up to 8.5 gigatonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent per year in the worst-case scenario.
Diana Ürge-Vorsatz, Vice-Chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, stated that governments should provide temporary measures such as cooling centers during heatwaves and warned that high air conditioning use is already jeopardizing the energy capacity of the European Union. Furthermore, a global review published in *Nature Reviews Clean Technology* by Santamouris and Vasilakopoulou emphasized that passive cooling technology must become central to climate adaptation, asserting that societies cannot air-condition their way out of climate change.
In response to escalating energy demands, the Indian government proposed limits in 2025 on how cool commercial and residential air conditioners can operate. These regulatory measures and research findings underscore the ongoing challenge for policymakers attempting to balance public health protection during extreme heat events with global climate mitigation goals.
