Andhra Pradesh Ranks First Nationally in Patient Safety Standards
Andhra Pradesh has secured the top position in India for patient safety standards, achieving a score of 86 out of 100 in a national evaluation conducted by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The ranking was announced during a conference held in New Delhi on September 17, 2026, to mark World Patient Safety Day.
National Performance Benchmarks
The state outperformed other regions in the national index, placing ahead of Madhya Pradesh, which scored 84.5, Gujarat at 83.5, and Tamil Nadu at 82. The evaluation highlighted a significant disparity in healthcare quality across the country, with states such as Arunachal Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh recording lower scores of 25 and 35, respectively. The assessment focused on critical healthcare delivery metrics, including clinical safety, hygiene protocols, and medication management.
Implementation and Quality Assurance
The recognition follows a comprehensive self-assessment process that covered 100 percent of the state's targeted public hospitals, including 53 Area Hospitals and 9 District Hospitals. Following these field inspections by district quality teams, a consolidated report was submitted to the National Health Systems Resource Centre on August 10, 2026. In addition to the safety score, Andhra Pradesh has made notable progress in the adoption of the National Quality Assurance Standards (NQAS). The state has reached a 65 percent certification rate across its public healthcare institutions. This certification reflects adherence to rigorous protocols governing patient-centric care and clinical safety. State health officials, including Commissioner of Health and Family Welfare KVN Chakradhar Babu, presented these quality roadmaps during the national conference, emphasizing the state's focus on non-communicable disease screening and post-care monitoring. State health authorities have encouraged medical staff and district quality teams to maintain these benchmarks as the department continues to refine its quality management systems across government facilities.
