Paramount Developing Live-Action Cyberpunk 2077 Film

Paramount Pictures has announced the development of a live-action film based on CD Projekt Red's Cyberpunk 2077, according to Kotaku. The project will be produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura, known for his work on the Transformers and G.I. Joe film series, with CD Projekt Red also serving as a producer. The announcement follows Paramount's recent corporate restructuring and merger with Warner Bros. Discovery, which has resulted in the parent company being renamed Skydance.
Trade reports confirmed that Paramount Pictures is developing a live-action Cyberpunk 2077 film produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura and CD Projekt Red, according to Kotaku.
Production and Creative Outlook
While the project is in its early stages, no writers, directors, or cast members have been attached. CD Projekt Red co-CEO Michał Nowakowski expressed support for the partnership, stating that Paramount shares the developer's creative ambitions for the franchise. The studio has not yet provided a release date for the adaptation. The move aligns with Paramount's broader strategy to increase its output of theatrical releases, with a commitment to debut at least 30 films in theaters annually.
CD Projekt Red joint CEO Michał Nowakowski stated on Twitter that they look forward to sharing more details at the appropriate time.
Context of Game Adaptations
This development marks the latest in a series of high-profile video game adaptations for Paramount, which is also producing a Call of Duty film directed by Peter Berg and written by Taylor Sheridan, slated for 2028. The studio is also co-producing a Street Fighter adaptation with Legendary, scheduled for release in October 2026. The Cyberpunk 2077 film will aim to expand the franchise beyond its gaming roots, which include the original 2020 title and the 2023 Phantom Liberty expansion. The game has achieved significant commercial success, with over 40 million copies sold worldwide. CD Projekt Red is currently developing a sequel, internally referred to as Cyberpunk 2, though no release window has been established.
Development is several steps away from release
A film project based on Cyberpunk 2077 begins with the rights, creative team and screenplay; an announced intention to develop a film is not a completed casting or production schedule. The game universe allows many possible stories, so fans should avoid treating familiar characters as confirmed participants. A live-action adaptation also has to translate dense worldbuilding into a format understandable to new audiences. A director, writer, official synopsis and production start are stronger signs of progress than early trade reporting alone.
